Possible plothole? (SPOILERS)

How did Martin Landau's character knew that Plummer's character will kill himself after he killed the nazi dude? He obviously had this plan to get both of them killed, but how did he knew that Plummer will kill himself, and what if Plummer doesn't remember even when he is told that he's Wallisch? Then Landau's plan is *beep* up. Does anyone know any explanation for this? It's bothering me so much.

I wasn't bothered by this, because I figured that Landau's character knew there was a risk of failure, but that if Zev tripped up, the other Nazi dude would kill him, and thus the main objective would be achieved - Zev remembering and suffering for what he did. The other guy would probably get prison time for the murder.

I saw Max as a sinister schemer who enjoyed the cat-and-mouse game. Of course there was the possibility of failure, but he enjoyed pulling the strings and watching the outcomes.

Max's main objective was to do as much revenge (damage) as possible. If he had killed Zev himself, there'd be no way of getting to Rudy. And if he got to Rudy, through Zev, first - Zev would be punished anyway: first, by confronting his own past; and secondly - he gets jail time anyway. So in that case it was a 'clever' plot by Max.

Of course, another thing is Max's responsibility; he knew he let loose a demented man who could hurt innocent people and/or innocent family members of Rudy.

But this film wasn't as deep as to contemplate on that moral subject.

Agree.

Max had instructed Zev to kill Otto and then call the police. He said as much when Zev called him to say he had shot someone. The master plan I guess was to at least get one SS killed and the other jailed.

When he realised Zev may have killed an innocent man (which was to be expected), he didn't call him off. And this says something about the thirst for revenge. I may be wrong but I think the film did intend to show how quickly a victim can turn persecutor.

Martin Landau's character had no guarantee that anything would come from his plan, but if you don't first put the plan in motion, how can you succeed?
