Dean Norris stole the show!!!!

The remarkable scene between Dean Norris and Christopher Plummer was worth the price of admission. It's a real jaw dropper. And, forgive me, but it's funny as hell, too. Enjoy.

There is no "off" position on the genius switch.

The headshot Zev got off on Trooper Kurlander was certainly remarkable though I kind of thought Norris overplayed the neo-nazi part, but I guess we can agree to disagree. Don't get me wrong, I thought Norris' portrayal of Walter White's brother-in-law in Breaking Bad was some awesome acting. He has the acting chops...just felt that once he believed Zev was a Jew, he went a little over the top for my money. But then, the only neo-nazi I ever knew was a timid self-loathing homosexual in denial.

reply

Tim, I think you're right about Zev's marksmanship. I think both hits were just lucky shots.

reply

I think his marksmanship was a clue to his true identity.

reply

True, and a second viewing will probably turn up a few other tells--like when Zev asks if it's a German gun. He's wavering in and out of his various consciousnesses.
But at the very end, he seems to know all.

you didnt remember you already posted that

Ha! Good point. I want to see it again to notice more of those.

reply

Agreed. It was the true man. A pro killer.

reply

In retrospect it was one of several "clues". Like telling the boy in the train that Zev means wolf in Hebrew.

Norris was a little over the top to me, but I think that's because we're so used to him portrayed as a man of some decency and integrity in almost all of his roles. He probably had it just right for a drunken nazi lovin prick.

reply

The whole sequence at Rudy 3's house was amazing. Plummer, Norris, Eva, the Nazi shrine in the house, the explosions going on in the site in back.

reply

He was over the top because he was drunk by then.

reply

he definitely seemed miffed about the main character's religious affiliation

reply

He was over the top but what do you expect? Zev peed on his couch. That couch really tied his room together.

reply

I agree Tim, Norris was way too over the top...which was disappointing cuz I thought he was great in Breaking Bad.

Not really sure how anybody could say he stole the show; but then again, who knows, the OP could be a family friend or somebody.

reply

i thought he was great, especially when he first gets home and starts getting to know Zev. The latter part of their conversation, he was drunk by then.

He probably could have done a little more slurring or whatever, but twice divorced drinker cop in a crappy life = rage monster. I had no problem with that performance.

That was by far the finest scene in a film with several memorable ones. It was initially rather sweet – two lonely and lost people connecting – but it soon turned terrifying and tragic.

reply

Nothing to forgive, since you're entitled to your opinion, but I can't for tge life of me recall anything funny about that scene, let alone "as hell". :-O

I must've missed the funny as hell part.

reply

That part of the film, with an explosion behind the house, air raid sirens, bizarre.

Yes, Atom does some amazing stuff in his films.

Setting the whole amazing house scene with the vicious dog named (presumably) after Eva Braun, the Nazi collectibles....etc. The guy raised by an unrepentant Nazi..

It wasn't funny per se but a kind of surreal tableau that was over the top and going into places that the rest of the film did not go.

Adding to that was the perfect setting of that particulare house. Atom used it to confuse an already confused old man who has forgotten his past but still has tiny moments of clarity...the house was just on the edge of the quarry where active blasting was going on.

They were evidently conducting blasting in the quarry while Zev was there....and right before hand they would sound that eerie siren just like a world war two air raid siren to warn everybody there is "fire in the hole!" before hitting the blast button.

So, Zev could first hear the "air raid siren" sound, then see results of explosions in the distance when he was outside, with dust kicking up like bombs had fallen. Then he'd continue to hear the sirens from the quarry over and over.

At first you think oh he's remembering these sounds of the siren and explosion from the war, then you realize it's really happening at the nearby quarry.

The whole thing was a masterpiece of setting and tensions and misdirection by Atom with Zev as the centerpiece.

reply

A lot was put in for that scene. "Eva!" )

I thought it was so scary when Norris transformed into this nice guy into this frightening anti-Semite.

Great work from the cast all-around.
