I noticed it and commented about it from the beginning. He finds every opportunity to sing and do theater. It seems like a hang over of his failed musical/theater career.
Failed? What makes you characterize it as "failed"? It's a part of what has helped him achieve success.
If you've watched Colbert during his Daily Show and Colbert Report years, finding opportunities to sing and dance should come as no surprise. He's been doing it for years, occasionally on The Daily Show, often on the Colbert Report (singing along with guest musical acts was a staple), and in full bloom in his Christmas special. He obviously loves it, and The Late Show allows him the opportunity to do it regularly.
In some ways, he's actually a throwback to the old days of television when hosts were trained in vaudeville and did frequent song and dance numbers.
