Disregarding his own generation

I doubt if anyone over 40 who watched last night's show understood the opening segment. Clearly they are aiming at the younger Beyonce crowd, who really don't watch that much late-night TV, or if they do they are watching Fallon. I'm weary of the constant reliance of all these shows on their audience knowing the latest internet viral sensation. I've been thinking it is time for me to stop watching, cut my cable, read more. I'm just not enjoying it as much as in the days I like to call the "golden age" when I could start at 11 with Jon Stewart, watch Colbert, Letterman, then Ferguson.

gotta stay trendy bro :>

You can cut your cable and still watch several late night shows, if you chose to do so.

How, please?

Easy. I don't have cable TV or satellite. I have a cheap flat screen TV and a rabbit ear antenna. I can see: Colbert, Kimmel, Fallon, Corden and Meyers every night, no subscriptions required, 100% free.

Heck, the flat screen TV isn't even required. An old style tube-TV with a digital converter attached to it will do the trick too.

And.... I manage to see plenty of clips from: Conan, Bee and Oliver (etc) as long as I wait about 24 hours for them to be uploaded to YouTube.

The days of paying a $120 cable bill are over.

I have no connections for an antenna.

reply

Yes you do. Find a neighbor, friend, grandchild, etc. to show you how.

If your TV is an old style tube TV you will need a digital converter. You'd hook the converter to the TV and the antenna to the converter.

If you have a modern flat screen TV then the antenna plugs right in. They ALL have a port for an antenna, that's how they pull in the over-the-air digital signal.

If your antenna is the really old type that had two U-clips that were attached to screws on the TV then you will simply need to visit an electronics store or a hardware store and get a cheap adaptor which you would attach the two U-clips to and then plug the other end into the TV. Or, just buy a modern antenna, they don't cost that much.

Thanks I'll have to check my manual. I did not see any imput on the back that said "antenna." (My TV is about a 5-yr old flat screen.)

reply

You're welcome. I hope it works out for you.

My flat screen TV is a few years old too. On mine, the port is called: DTV/TV.

It's actually just a standard coaxial port, exactly the same as basic cable TV uses, the kind of cable with just one pin in the middle.

I actually get quite a few channels over-the-air, it's a lot bigger lineup than broadcast TV used to have in years past.

There's a trade off though. You'll get more movies and TV-series reruns than broadcast TV ever used to have but if you like live sports you can just about forget about it. Every major sport besides the NFL has almost totally migrated to cable these days.

My exact late schedule. It was great.

"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"

reply

Yes, so many laughs then, compared to now. Last night I DVRed Colbert but forgot to watch it--shows my level of enthusiasm these days. And where has The Daily Show gone? I think even the Nightly Show has gone missing, not that I watched it much. Comedy Central is now back to its crappy old pre-Stewart and Colbert self.
