The show is finally hitting it's stride this week. Might be the time off

Wow, The Late Show has finally hit it's grove in the last week or so, and it might be Stephen is finally being himself. The show's sit behind the desk segments have been just hilarious, and Colbert seems to have found his dead on timing again.

I don't think it's any coincidence that it came after 2 weeks off for the Olympics. A one hour show 5 times a week is just so much more energy than a half hour show 4 times a week, no matter if he was in character. (Which may have been easier for Colbert)

I hope CBS figures this out, because this is the best the show has been since it started.

He's been himself since the show began. What he's doing now is finally coming to grips with the idea that, in order to be successful, he can't be himself, so he's reverting, to a small extent, to the ratings winning irreverent political edginess of his Report persona.

For the most part, it has been a little better. Stephen playing a character with a backbone will always be better than his real spineless self, but... while he can bring some of this spunk into the monolog and the desk pieces, he can't be edgey with the guests, so the guest segments are still snore-fests.

And a little better is a far far cry from being fixed. A slight improvement doesn't erase the last year. He can't say "whoops, I made mistake and am going back to my report persona," and everyone will start tuning in again. That ship has sailed.
