Give him a break Jesus Christ! It hasn't even been a year, he's never done this format before. The report was a character he had to have things written through a tiny prism. The late night format is completely different, it takes more preparation and they're clearly trying to be different from Fallon and Kimmel. Look at someone like Carson, he was really rough when he started the tonight show. Personally Colbert is so much better to me than Fallon or Kimmel. Fallon used to be fresh, now it just comes off lazy; now that they've stayed dominant they don't try to do anything. It's the same games, same sketches just different guests and Fallon's interviews are the worst. Also Fallon almost seamlessly made the transition from Late Night To Tonight, by just moving his entire show across a hall to a different set, not having to build it up from scratch or follow any huge expectations like Colbert has to do. (It's not like Leno set a very high bar for Fallon to clear lol)
Honestly, I think Colbert isn't very good with Pop-Culture Celeb comedy.
His CC show was hard politics for Hard-core educated liberals or Hard-core conservatives who just liked his fake RW persona.
He had never tried to appeal to the non-political middle of the road celeb-watchers/people magazine crowd.
Celeb interviews don't know how to talk to Colbert because he is too much of a snobby-intellectual political comedian, and most celebs don't want to talk about politics when promoting movies.
Conan got the shaft and did not give him time to build up a fanbase but the real issue there was that they wanted to get rid of Leno when Leno wasn't ready to go and was still on top in the ratings. So when they saw Conan's ratings dropping like a rock they panicked and gave the show back to Leno, it was ridiculous by NBC. Not Leno's fault, he was also getting the shaft in his mind. The most offended here was Conan, who moved out of a really cool show to be the tonight show host (his dream) only for it to be taken away after a few months. But hey, he got paid millions and millions for the damages and seems to be having more fun practically being his own boss right now.
NBC were the culprits of all that mess, I actually like both Conan and Leno a LOT and I believe we will never see a better back to back line up like Leno leading up to Conan back in the day, when Leno brought in the biggest guests and conan brought in the biggest laughs.
What do we have now? Hipster Fallon?! Who has never been funny and seems to be on coke all day long?
Colbert? Who is such a diminished version compared to the Colbert Report, where he shined and had one of the funniest shows around, and now doesn't seem to know what to do with this format.
Or Jimmy Kimmell, who sucks in every way possible and is only decent for "mean tweets"
Late Night is doomed.
I'm the guy who makes the "worst movie ever" thread in your favorite movie board
Late Night died with the end of "LNWCOB" for me. That show was the last one that some real energy, that didn't play it safe, and had the best writers (Louis CK, Brian Stack and others) all in one place.
Fallon is a silly party for the young ones, Conan is still acceptable but the departure of his best writers really hurt him, Colbert does nothing for me if he isn't doing political comedy or media satire (where he is excels).
Late Night is dead but it will hardly be the last format which will be killed by the internet.
Don't sell Seth Meyers so short. The writing is consistently strong and Meyers has proven to be up to the task. Definitely the adult in the room late at night.

I tried to get into it but failed. Seth Meyers is a bit too bland for my taste, like Lorne Michaels made him in a lab. I know it's not fair and he will probably grow on me if I give him the chance, so I'll plan to do that.
Yet I have not seen even one sketch from LNWSM - do they even do them?
