Seems to me they may have had a brand problem. No one knows what "BFG" is on its own, especially with all the abbreviations and acronyms we have nowadays. They should have called it the Big Friendly Giant.

I knew what it was mostly because I worked in a children's library department for a while, and they had a multiple copies of it, so I figured it must really be a beloved classic for a lot of kids. But maybe it's more popular in Britain than the US? I'd actually not read any Dahl books as a kid, I don't think. :/ I bought James & the Giant Peach after falling in love with that film.
