The initial goal has been met on Kickstarter, so this film is going to be made on schedule, rather than with a 3-5 year delay.
Cassie has set a stretch goal, to get funding to qualify the film so it can be considered for the Oscars. I believe this mostly means that it must run for one week in LA and Manhattan (with advertising in a major newspaper, and a review in NYT and LA Times) and had a public distribution during the calendar year prior to the Awards night. For the 2014 Oscars, 151 documentaries qualified, 15 (10%) were on the shortlist, of which 5 were nominated.
If you've seen the poster for the film, or even if you've just seen the title, then you'll like this warning that IMDb has given me: "You don't upload an avatar - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You do upload an avatar - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes"
I haven't had an avatar for nearly a decade, and I'm still using the old website (to the extent they still let me). I'm not going to change now.
