Mark Rylance was captivating!

I enjoyed the movie, but i had to come and make a post about Mark Rylance. I did not know about this actor before this movie, but after watching him play Rudolf Abel, i had to look him up and learn about him. Because his acting was so 'interesting' for the lack of a better word. I cant pinpoint as to why i was so interested in his every scene, but it was just his small nuances, his twitches of his lips, his eyes and his body language, his accent was so convincing to me that we has actually portraying a unique person and his traits.Even though i have no idea if that is how Rudolf Abel behaved.

And doing all this rather effortlessly at that. Beautiful!

Great movie BTW, finally got around to watching it.

I agree with you. Rylance was definitely the standout in the film. Hanks was solid. Just Hanks being Hanks.

reply

Yes Hanks was being Hanks. One odd was, when Abel was talking about the Standing man incident, at the end of scene, was Hank about to cry? He certainly made a face that looked so.

I posted pretty much the same sentiments/experience after I saw this film. I see tons of films but it was the first time I saw Rylance. Less is more baby!

Check out Wolf Hall, excellent series:

Six hours of Mark Rylance in his right element.

Agree totally. There is a school of (mainly) British acting which seems to emphasis very subtle gestures and movements to convey emotion and action. Another great example is Michael Kitchen's role in Foyles War, where he expresses a vast array of thoughts while barely seeming to act. You and many others seem to have caught on to it. I think its fantastic. Rylance is very well known for his stage acting too.

Mark Rylance is mainly a stage actor, not film actor.

reply

yes... which is what I said.

reply

I think he has a solid chance at winning a best supporting actor Oscar. He really did a phenomenal job.

reply

Yes, he was the highlight of an otherwise underwhelming film.

reply

Mark Rylance's role was definitely Oscar winning material. His subtle performance was captivating. Every little twitch, the few words needed to convey his feelings, etc. Wonderful!

Check out Wolf Hall he was absolutely brilliant a master class in acting

His performance was certainly the stand-out point of the movie. One thing that got me thinking me though, is that his accent had a bit of a Scottish air about it...I wonder if that was intentional on Mr Rylance's part . It was certainly mentioned during the movie that he had a british passport and that he was from the north of England , which is obviously on the Scottish border.

" I'm just gonna go find a cash machine..."

.
Scots accents are fairly similar to Russian accents, so it may have been the combination of English and (very faint) Russian accent that you were hearing.
