Did the student ever get his thesis back?

I'm still reading the book so I don't know for sure yet. However, I do know that he (Frederic Pryor) was awarded his PhD the following year (1962), so I kind of suspect he did.

I read somewhere that he actually already had submitted it, so the theft of his only copy was for dramatic effect.
