So what information was Abel passing?

How much damage did he do and what kind of info? He was just a New Yorker who walked around painting. Not exactly gold mine intelligence activity.

He was in charge of finding out was the ingredients were in a coney island hot dog at Nathan's. Pretty sensative information at the time.

reply

Abel's handler: "Have you at least tried a Nathan hotdog?"
Abel: "Would it help?"

reply

Dang! Nice one!

my toughts exactly. i mean they traded a pilot of the state of the art spy plane they knew "nothing" about for the guy. who knows, maybe he was some mean mastermind:-)

reply

I thought the significance of the painting, which he did from memory, was that anything he had was stored in his head at the time.

Oh that's an interesting idea. But hey they did show him to the back seat!

I definitely agree that he was way more valuable and the Russians made a pretty good deal even 2 for 1.

He was the middle man in a network of spies tasked with stealing secrets about the US atomic bomb program. As part of the network he was in contact with other spies directly involved in the program. He spent some time in Santa Fe which was a collection point for secrets coming out of Los Alamos. He was also in contact with Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, two of the most famous spies of the cold war era who were executed in 1953 for crimes related to their spying.

By the time he was caught he been spying in the United States for nearly a decade, and before that he had been involved in intelligence work for nearly two decades.

reply

He was convicted of conspiracy. It was never proven that he ever transmitted any secrets to the Soviets.

talking of convictions: on-line I read that Abel was sentenced to 45 years in prison. And yet the movie says 30 years. Not very important, but why go to the trouble of changing it?

reply

The filmmakers probably read wikipedia which says 30 years.
