Subtlety is what makes this film so great

The realistic emotions, and unpoetic dialogue were what intrigued me. Anyone else feel the same way?

It was great acting all around. Not to mention the cinematography was amazing - especially the scenes in Berlin with the wall...

Yes, agreed. Sensational story. Hanks nailed it as usual. Rylance was amazing. Loved it.

You couldn't describe this movie as being over the top, though the real life story itself is riveting in its own downbeat way.🐭

reply

Exactly, I'm not that familiar with the actual events, but it was totally believable, the way that portrayed it.

Agree for the most part. However it seemed to me some of the most dramatic scenes were a little over acted and not so subtle in trying to get the gravity of the situation across to the viewer, when it was obvious (to me at least).

I liked how understated much of it was, and they didnt resort to pointless action and tension.

But I found a lot of the dialogue to actually be very poetic.

I know what you are saying. "Un-flowery?" might be a better word.

reply

Totally agree - the subtlety which is why I think so many do not like Rylance's performance and/or find the film really long and boring. Love Cold war stuff. And this one is excellent.

I think people expect overblown drama, and given the title, I can understand that. If a person was expecting bond level acting, they might not be ready for the realism of this one.
