So I guess the supposedly beloved family of Abel, namely his wife, daughter and cousin, was more likely to be actors arranged for the purpose of extracting any information concerning Abel, provided that Donovan's heart is softened. I was a little suspiscious when seeing the overwhelming expressions and sentiments from the wife and the daughter, and became more certain when they left the room indifferently when ordered by the KGB's chief.
So am I right? I guess it might seem quite obvious to some, but still, would like to make sure of that :)

yes, thats how i read it, and in fact tom hanks character makes mention of them in this vein - of abels family "not knowing each other" later in the film. hanks is played as a soft touch from the minute he arrives, because the kgb know he is just a family man lawyer, not an experienced agent. the mugging, the actors pretending be abels family, the suggestion to release abel and then they will release powers later. but he is not taken in by it, and is a skilled negotiator, and as we know, succeeds in the end.

It didn't dawn on me that they were a fake family until I read the wiki plot summary and looked at the threads here. Good to know. Great movie.

The other give-a-way was when Hanks was talking to the German lawyer and he got the mother and daughter's names the wrong way around.

Yes, and the sounds of their feet when 'marching' out was more reminiscent of military ppl in a parade line...perfectly in sync.
