Heading north to die? What is it about Aussie movies?

Here we have another movie about a bloke (always a man) traveling great distances across Australia's vast and amazing countryside once they reach the point in their lives when their mortality is brought home to them.

Traveling North was the first I remember and after that was Charlie and Boots.

Is there a formula?

Take and aging but well known face, throw in a plot about life's final journey and make the back drop the outback.A sure-fire winner, right?

I haven't seen the other films you mentioned, but I thought this was a great movie.
