Ryan & Alicia

What is up with Ryan going behind Alicia's back in the last 2 episodes?
First it was the training session and Now telling Alvey about the her new coach before she could say anything?

He seems really petty at this point.

reply

He doesn't owe her anything. She's a straight up opportunist and turns on a dime.

reply

I think he wants Alvey to train only him. He doesn't want her around the gym.

reply

Alicia is a *beep* buddy for Ryan, he does not love her.

reply

Ryan's the principal dancer at Navy St. and wants to be treated that way. He's gotten Alvey, Lisa and Nate in line, but Alicia still has to learn her place.

Did you notice his disappointment when his old coach paid little attention to him and showed interest in Alicia? Of course he's going to encourage her to go. After she's not treated special there, she'll return and show him more regard for rank.

Btw, the scheduling conflict wasn't the first time. He didn't like her staying at Alvey's house and ended that. And I don't remember for sure, was it he who had the problem with her getting a new car?

reply

I think it was Lisa.

reply

Ryan has a lot of good qualities but he is a diva. He has been and is one of the better fighters so he can get away with a lot and requires a lot of attention. it's pretty evident from his preflight freak outs he needs someone to hold his hand

Or he could just be an asshat the gets off *beep* with people. fighters are not normal

reply

yeah ryan looks for approval and is a total diva. perhaps taking his fathers life changed him in a certain way. but this alpha dog *beep* has to stop or its gonna backfire on him.

reply

Ryan is a little biatch that needs someone to constantly tell him he's special.

I hope Jay beats him a second time and tells him to get out of Navy St because it's his gym.

reply

Who brings in more money, Ryan or Jay? Designers and manufacturers, which fighter do they prefer advertising their brand: Erratic druggie Jay or remorseful and redeemed Ryan?

reply

Ryan taking drugs and not passing his drug test to where they have to bury it and he has to take 6 crappy fights to make up for it, isn't a druggie problem? Or how about getting drunk and getting upset that Jay doesn't kiss his behind, so he tries to fight him at a party and hurts his knee before a title fight, isn't a problem?

Both these boys are problematic, but Alvey is once again, creating a problem where there doesn't need to be one. Everyone would understand why Alvey chose to be in his son's corner over Ryan. Instead, he's going to cause a sh!t storm with everyone and the media by choosing Ryan. Jay has already shown that if you believe in him and encourage him that he can be just as good, if not better than, Ryan. So, Alvey, as his FATHER should always always back Jay. Jay could be the big title belt champ with less Drama Queen tendencies that Ryan clearly has.

Now, Alvey told his son he chose Ryan and it just got him deeper and deeper in with Ava. And now Jay has a bigger mountain to climb with what happened to Ava.

As I said, I hope Jay destroys Ryan the drama queen and proves his POS father wrong.

Of course you're right. However, what we're shown is not necessarily what the characters see. Outsider character perspectives are not ours.

Product peddlers and fight promoters know Ryan's past: As a former champion, his appeal, his education, his problems. He's been incarcerated = paid his dues. His father openly forgave him and supported his renewed career. He's expressed his remorse in front of cameras and appeared sincere. From their POV, he's redeemed.

Whereas Jay, is flamboyant, wild and flaunts his "partying" nature.

Jay would sell some products but Ryan's persona has a more broad appeal.

Which fighter would bring in more money. It's a business decision.

remorseful and redeemed Ryan

LOL! They're both erratic junkies, though Ryan is a conniving bitch with little regard for anyone else. Ryan just has name recognition. He might be more profitable right now but he'd stab Alvey and anyone else in the back for a pack of gum.

I think Alvey chose Ryan because he's a better fighter and more reliable - he's been, mostly, consistent.
Jay, on the other hand, has fallen repeatedly into bad habits.

Also, if we're honest, Jay won't do what Alvey says. Every piece of instruction will be a struggle and Alvey doesn't want that.
I really don't think Alvey is thinking about sponsors, that's what the fighters are thinking about, not this coach.

reply

Agree. Jay is head strong and does things his way or no way. Plus he only beat Ryan because Ryan was hurt.

To be honest this story line makes the least sense. The writers having two people from the same gym fighting for the same belt is very unrealistic since there are MMA fighters all over the US. Unless I am missing something and it's a local title for whose the best fighter of that class in the city they live in.

Jay has a long history of being a screw up in terms of sustained discipline and listening to input from others.

reply

I won't pretend to know how trainers and gyms work but I would assume Alvey wants the wins and recognition to bring in more great fighters and keep his gym going. I agree with you that Alvey likely prefers that Ryan is more willing to listen to Alvey but not the rest. Ryan is every bit as erratic and unreliable as Jay. Ryan had to drop out of fighting because he paralyzed his father. Lisa didn't even want him there he was so erratic and dangerous. Ryan is also an addict and worse, he rages out when he's high/drunk. He's paralyzed his dad, trashed Alvey's gym, assaulted Alvey and got himself hurt right before an important fight because he's a raging drunk and prone to tantrums.

I just think Alvey is shitty father and there's a weird dynamic where he doesn't seem to want to do for his children what he's willing to do for other fighters. I also don't think Ryan is the better fighter.

The chances of two people from a tiny gym vying for the same national title not once but twice in such a short time is beyond unprobable.

Ryan has been steadfast the whole time, in fact any erratic behavior we have to take the writer's word on since it happened before the show begins. He's been nothing but polite and focused on his fighting. You must be watching another show if you think Ryan is erratic and unreliable. Getting hurt because he got too drunk is something happens to every drinker I know. Besides that, it wasn't erratic behavior, his sex partner had just insulted his sexual performance which is most guys' achilles heel.

Jay is erratic, he had no reason to go on a drug binge. He had just won his fight.

Ryan is a better fighter as established by the show and Alvey isn't a *beep* father, he's not great but not bad. His boys turned out alright in the sense that they look out for each other, aren't criminals and have some fighting talent, if anything the mother is *beep*

reply

You must be watching another show if you think Ryan is erratic and unreliable.

You're right. We are watching two different shows. In the one I'm watching, Ryan is an addict and rage drunk that raged out, got wasted then trashed his coach's gym and assaulted him. But yeah, totes not erratic, nothing but polite. He again raged out, got wasted and fucked up his knee right before a fight but yeah, completely reliable and focused on his fighting. (The only people I know that get drunk and rage out are alcoholics. You might want to stage some interventions.)

Jay is erratic, he had no reason to go on a drug binge.

Sure, I mean besides his whole junkie, whoring mom endless drams and a junkie gf only want to get high and bang. I mean it's no getting insulted by your bang buddy (LOL) but it's something.

Alvey isn't a *beep* father

 Okay dude, enjoy your show, whatever it is.

Honestly I think that Ryan sees that Keith can't handle Alicia being in the house and/or together with him. This gets her away from the situation. He wont abandon Keith.

reply

What Ryan and Keith have in common is they both want to be the center of someone else's attention. For Keith its Ryan for certain reasons and for Ryan it's Alvey for another set of psychological reasons. That's why this show is so awesome, it has all these layers to it.

reply

It really is an amazing show. It's one of the best dramas I've seen. It's hard to put my finger on it. The acting, the script, the direction, it's so real. They do the drama so well, without going over the top and making it a soap opera. Very brilliantly just balancing on that fine line and they all seem like real, actual people.

Doesn't hurt I love MMA too.

reply

Even though MMA is just a metaphor for the story of all of these characters - I'm the opposite. I knew nothing (and didn't care) about MMA. Now, I'm on the hunt to watch MMA! This show is bloody AWESOME! I can't believe more people aren't watching this one.

reply

How great! MMA is an awesome sport with a lot more layers than it's given credit for. Kinda like the show :) UFC 202 is coming up pretty soon and should be a good card!

Yeah, it should get more exposure. It's one of the best series I've ever seen. Really, really good.

reply

UFC202.. McGregor and Diaz... Jay vs Ryan should be like Lawler vs McDonald from UFC189, at the end of round 4 (i think), the bell rang and both guys just stood in middle of ring, all bloodied and bruised, staring each other down. Still get chills looking at that!

But most people would be put off by the MMA part of the show. I mean I tell many people about it and they usually say "i'm not into MMA, so I probably wont like it" ARGH!
