"Private Lives" scene - why?

Much medical detail in the book has been left out of the film, which is good, but there is one scene in the film that is not in the book. Tim is playing Elyot in Act 1 of "Private Lives" when he says "I love you, John " instead of "...Amanda." It would bring down not just "Amanda"'s fully justified curse, but the wrath of the stage manager and the producer, and quite possibly Tim's acting career, and it adds nothing to our knowledge of Tim or John. So I can't understand why the scene is there.
