The man was so lonely so he imagined the turtle to be a women and had imagined having a son with her. He spent his whole life with a turtle on the island and the turtle left in the end.

I think he killed the turtle when he was upset and then imagined the turtle turning into a woman.

But we got scenes from the son's POV. Doubt the man would imagined that.

Dude needed to get away from his mom and dad. So he found his turtle entourage (maybe featuring Turtle) and did so. I'm guessing he wanted to see the community his dad drew for him. Speaking of communities, I miss IMDb forums something awful. Anyone else?
