Imagine Bruce Willis playing Link

You know, if Bruce still cared about the craft and wasn't mudxing up his name with this direct-to-Redbox bullplop. Now imagine Bruce playing the role with Mel directing. Mel directing or costarring wifh Mel sounds cool, especially now that they are older.

Even in the prime of Bruce's acting career, I can't see him pulling this role off, or at least nowhere close to as Mel did here. The scene in the motel room where Link explains to Lydia why she truly wants to live and isn't suicidal was a wonderful bit of acting that required a subtle but strong mix of warmth, empathy, and hard-edged reality that I'm not sure Bruce could pull off even in his best days, and certainly not at this point where he's just sleepwalking through all his roles.

Mel Gibson on his worst day is better than Bruce Willis on his best day.

Sorry but even when Bruce "cared about his craft", he never had Mel's talent and range.

When it comes to cool action heroes, they both rock.

From Die Hard 2 trivia:

The first time Holly McClane is seen on the plane, the woman sitting next to her is reading a magazine advertising the VHS release of Lethal Weapon 2 (1989). Both the first two Die Hard movies and the Lethal Weapon series were produced by Joel Silver. Ironically, both Mel Gibson and Bruce Willis were considered for each other's roles of John McClane and Martin Riggs but turned it down and it went to each other vice versa.

reply

Bruce Willis as Riggs? That's a laugh.

No tough guy actors cry like Mel. Nor do they do intense and crazy like him either. Riggs required both.

reply

Yeah, agree. I can't see Bruce doing that trailer scene the way Mel did. Would've been a completely different movie with Bruce Willis. Still cool since they're both great, but way different.

Agree.

I like them both, but nothing holds a candle to MG

"Guys like you don't die on toilets." Mel Gibson-Riggs, Lethal Weapon

So true. I always thought Bruce "Smirky" Willis peaked with the series MOONLIGHTING and that Mel -- who was offered the lead in DIE HARD before Willis was -- would've made a much better John McClain.

I actually don't think he would be able to pull off the nuances in this role like mel did..
