Sorry, but it was crap. Disappointed in you Mel

Dreary, predictable, poor acting and stupid story. The guy's daughter was missing for years and when she turns up it's just "hello, care to share your troubles?" Mel could've done better than this guff

MY OTHER CAR IS WONDER WOMAN!!

Sorry you didn't like it. Mel was awesome and so was the film. The book is great too.

Yeah, the story is she doesn't know who else to help her BUT her real father. She ran from her mom and stepdad; Link was in prison at the time.

It actually was a meaningful story, and the acting was great.

So I don't believe it was "crap" at all.

I feel that people that LOVE action films hate sentimental stuff in their films.
I've been on IMDb long enough to see that over and over.

For instance, We Were Soldiers, so many men HATED the women part. This one has some sweet elements in it...makes me wonder. But then some people are downers, and just hate for the sake of hating.

Oh well, Hacksaw Ridge is out soon, and the reviews are fabulous so far. Maybe you'll like it...I'm guessing no, but..

Did the novel have as much dialogue as the movie did? I've never watched a 90 min movie with SO much talking crammed in to every minute.

May pick up the novel if it is more atmospheric & let's the story breathe a bit.

Adapting a novel to film is hard because there is so much you can fit into a film. Maybe he didn't want a two hour film for budget reasons. I think what they did with the story was fine.

Spoiler..

The book has a TON more dialog and has chapters on Link's days in the past, as well as him killing the guy for why he was serving prison time. It has Lydia meeting Jonah for the first time and all that stuff about the house..he made her collect his money for him, etc. There are scenes of when he finds out he has a baby in the hospital, on and on. Yeah, it was a good book, and again, I think the way the compilation of scenes in the film works well for the length of time they had.

There are some funny scenes in the book that are not in the film. I posted the whole joke she tells in the bar too on a thread in this forum.

Appreciate the insight into the novel.

As a stand-alone movie (most viewers not having read the novel) the rapid fire lengthy dialogue didn't feel grounded in reality. More words per minute than about any movie I can remember seeing.

You're welcome.

I didn't see it that way at all though. I mean there was constant movement, but then they had to to move things along, lol. I thought there were a lot of slow parts in the film as well. I guess we all see things differently. :/

In the book too, Link takes a long while to die; she covers him up with dirt at night to keep him warm, to no avail, after their car went down a hill and they were sort of hidden. Also, when they were with preacher at his place, preacher was growing weed in a big room, to sell, and Cherise locked Lydia and Link in there; that is why Lydia said if you call the police, they will bust you too. It did seem out of context a bit in the film, but I think they meant it was because he was using his place as a front for something illegal. Even then he would not tell Link what that was. In the book it was clear.

Since you've read the book, I have a question and that was how Link and Lydia were tracked down by the gang and the Sicario those first two times. (Obviously, SPOILERS for those who haven't seen the film). I had assumed that when Jonah's men found the trailer, they found out the location through digging into Link's criminal background (since Jonah's second-in-command made a comment about how parolees don't call cops). When the Sicario showed up, I assumed he was listening in to police scanners and just beat the cops to the motel room. Did the book go into detail about how they were being tracked?

I'll have to get back with you on this about the whole tracking thing. I know that Link and Lydia had to go to where she used to live and the girls apartment that Lydia was friends with and had stayed there was broken in to. They were tracking Lydia by all means. I think they added the Sicario in this; I honestly don't remember him. The bad guys left trails of people burned and tortured per say, even at preachers. That is why Link was so scared this was not "normal" gang stuff.

The film added stuff not in the book and took stuff out from the book. They tried to adapt it to make sense for a short film. That's a hard task, lol

It's been years since I read it. I'll do my best finding out. 

You've convinced me to read the book, thanks for taking the time to expand on some areas the movie didn't explore :)

Cool, but remember, some things that are in the film are not in the book and vice versa.

They aren't exactly alike. So it's like watching Payback, the theater vs the directors cut. Same, but different. Just keep that in the back of your mind.

Anyway, reading is good and usually the books are better too.

Totally agree with you, Rindercella, on all counts. 'Hacksaw Ridge' looks great...although the trailer seems to give away the whole film.

I'm just concerned it's going to be a yet another preaching film. I like history, I like realism - I don't like films that push sky-fairy nonsense.

reply

This movie is very messy and not very well made...plot holes left and right and to much stuff compresed in to little time...even Mel does a mediocre role here, even if he is the best thing about this movie, but I dont doubt that the book is great...books usally are much better cause of the failure to adapt it to a movie.

Have to agree. Watched 20 minutes and turned it off. Garbage.
