Movie: 5/10, Mel Gibson: 9/10

Gibson was fun to watch. Plus, there's the pleasure of seeing him back in action, for those of us anxious to see him out of the Hollywood corner.

Movie itself was okay, rushed a little, not as emotionally weighty as it wanted to be, with cartoonish villains, a missed opportunity to explore the relationship between Mexican drug lords and white militias, instead throwing in tidbits about honorable Mex day laborers and loser Nazis, a silly plot but good enough to string some fun action scenes (especially the funny trailer fight).

The actress is cute playing a liquored up, drugged out damsel in distress, but she also had to be charming, flirty, educated, alternately wise and stupid, and I thought that was a little too much for her to pull off.

Overall, still a fun movie. Will see it again. Loved seeing Mel.

(We all know and always knew he totally would've ROCKED as an older Mad Max).

Yes, really glad to see him back in acting. I don't have to like Mel in his private person (which I don't due to stuff he's done in past), but I do like him acting very much, especially in this movie.
Reminds me of the days when he did Braveheart, absolutely great.

And I did like his role performance very much in The Beaver. For doing so many action flicka, he's actually doing his best in soft, sensitive roles, more to the drama genres.

OP nailed it. The movie was ok. Gibson was great.

reply

I would give it 7/10. I just wish it was a little action packed

reply

I averaged my scores and gave it 7, too.

It could've used a tiny bit more action. The kind of stylized action I think i remember seeing in Richet's Mesrine movies. (been a while but remember being impressed).

Mel Gibson was great, movie was good but there was no action whatsoever.

7 out of 10

but there was no action whatsoever.

That's not true at all. Did you fall asleep?

I thought Mel was good and everything else was mediocre at best. Appropriate scores.

I had no idea who the daughter was before I checked IMDB. I quite liked her in the The Kings of Summer but not at all in this. The bad writing didn't help her but still.

Gibson does elevate the movie.

still, the movie is one of the better movies of 2016 if you ask me as i just finished re-watching it just now on Dec 24th 2016, which makes for my second viewing (my first viewing of it was Aug 29th 2016), and i still mildly like the movie even thought it dropped a little on a re-watch for me as it was a 6-6.5/10 and is now a...

6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up)

p.s. but i will say 2016 is my overall weakest year since 1998 as i would have to go back to 1998 to find a weaker overall year than this year.
