Love this series!

It's hard to explain why I love this series so much, but I have been looking forward to this final part for a long time, more then any other movie sequel! I recently rewatched 1-4 to see if they still hold up in my mind. And it's a resounding YES from me.

Maybe I love them so much because they have kept the same cast (albeit a brief replacement for Mike in the 2nd.) since the first movie in the seventies! I don't know of any other long running film series (37 years long!) that has done this so well. The way the deleted scenes from the first Phantasm were incorporated into part four was really well done and very touching.

Also it's because of the independent nature of the movies that I dig them so much. You can feel the creative love in these films. They are more concerned with making a good film then making big bank. It feels like home cooking compared to fast food.

Or maybe it's because of the wonderfully strange yet compelling story. You just want to know more and as each part goes by, it gets increasingly fascinating and bizarre. Yet it all still makes sense somehow... in a defying logic kinda way!

Or maybe it's because of the great casting, particularly of The Tall Man and Reggie, the kick ass ice cream vendor. I can't see any remake coming close to replacing Angus (RIP) and Mr. Bannister.

I felt that part four ended well and was a good closure to the series, although there was no 'final showdown'. Ravager looks set to resolve this big time. A lot of people are complaining about the CGI and Cheap Look of the film... but that's part of the charm of these movies. They are well made, but never have big budgets, shot by a bunch of friends. It's the story that matters and I for one am sure they will deliver.

Roll on October!

I'm really excited that they are pursuing Romano's (?) ideas of dealing with the inconsistencies between the films by jumping down the alternate reality rabbit hole. I'm a fan of the series and the way each seemed to exist within its own reality influenced by elements of the other films just felt right and created a bizarre overarching narrative structure that is 100% original.

Well said! It's the story that matters the most. As long as the mood and pacing are good (looks like it may have a similar feel to the 2nd film), with story elements that lead to a satisfying conclusion, there is very little to complain about here!
