Extremely Negative Review (SPOILERS!)

Okay, so, spoilers. Major spoilers.

Also if this is true, it kind of... I don't know how to react.

And the review is extra negative.

Well you can't please everybody. I loved how he had to throw that jab in about Angus, when it's been stated numerous times that he filmed very little due to his declining health. I still plan on seeing this anyways.

I am afraid this may be true. I always thought Oblivion was a perfect ending. I took the final scene with Mike and Reggie in the truck to be saying the whole series had been Mike's imagination coping with Jody's death and finally coming to terms with it and accepting Reggie.

nickerboy, since you brought up Oblivion in your comment, what is your opinion on the film? Personally I liked it and feel that it is very underrated.

reply

Like you, I think Oblivion is underrated. I don't understand the hate it gets and lie I daid, I felt it provided excellent closure. I like to watch all 4 films back to back, Oblivion comes across so much better when viewed that way.

reply

I don't get the hate that is piled on to Oblivion. It is my favourite of the Phantasm sequels.

Every Phantasm sequel ever has gotten extremely negative reviews.

A lot of his negative view is exactly what I stated about the 5 min trailer that they removed from the web everytime it popped up.

The ending of the film also seems to make sense if you bothered to read it.

I'll still watch it but if it IS indeed bad.... oh well... it is what it is.

It can't be that much worse than Oblivion in my opinion. I thought 4 was going to have some awesome footage that was deleted from the OG cut of Phantasm but indeed that was not the case. If I recall there was a tiny bit of flashbacks but nothing from the really long cut of Phantasm that supposedly existed at one time. Sadly with age, you lose a lot of mojo and since Don seemed to not even WANT to direct the swan song that might say a lot. I mean... the most stylistic one was 2 because it had that budget boost... but the first one was a classic.
I'd say a sleeper classic horror film. The ball is back.... I always though out of the endless remakes out there maybe Phantasm deserved it the most.... Give it a decent budget... and make a remake that even Don would be proud of and give it to some guys that can do effects really well but on a cheaper budget.
20 million could make an epic Phantasm movie and I'd bet if they did it right, even without the OF Tall Man sadly... it would bank some $$$.

Oblivion was awesome, much better than Phantasm 3.

Lord of the Dead is my least favourite Phantasm movie so far.

Honestly, while I'll still see the movie, if this is the pay off Reggie gets.. I'm going to be all sorts of disappointed. I've always been a fan of the genuinely melancholy endings of the Phantasm episodes but this feels like it harkens back unnecessarily to the original ending of Phantasm. It would've perhaps worked if there weren't four sequels creating a great mythology but after four movies of increasing zaniness, it's hard to thematically to write it off as "just a dream." To me, that's dropping the ball (or sphere). Hard.

reply

It might seem like they are dropping the ball.... BUT that's pretty much the title of the film.

And 3 was much more fun and interesting than 4 plus it seemed to have a MUCH better budget and it looked like it. Part 4 seems to me at least to be VERY slow.... lacked in style... sort of lost in what they should really do about everything. Just did not enjoy it at all coming from the epic ending of 3.
Three was sort of goofy but it felt much more in-line of 1-2. 4 just felt like it was trying to be really different and I didn't like where it was going.

I agree, 3 is better than 4. Phantasm III has always been one of my favorite sequels. Really underrated!

P3 rules.

Lol the guys description of Phantasm isn't even close to accurate on it's own and the scene that inspired Don was from Kenny not Jim. So take it with a grain of salt. The reaction is definitely what I'd expect from a more casual fan.

reply

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. We'll see in a bit. My fingers crossed!!! BOY! :DDD

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.......BE WARNED...........

I just finished watching Phantasm Ravager and I agree with most....not all....of the negative review. I felt very letdown after seeing it and felt that we never received the final ending we were promised. Instead the ending was left open for a bunch more sequels.
The CGI looked horrible for 2016 and we knew that Rocky was returning but instead of what should have been a touching and warm reunion between her and Reggie, fell flat. I have been a Phan since seeing the original on video in the very early 80's and was a little pissed and sad at the same time after seeing Ravager.
Anyone else feel this way?
