Utter dissapointment...

I am a huge, big time fan of the Phantasm quadrilody and couldnt wait for the 5th installment to be released. Saw it yesterday. Utter dissapointment. I dont know what budget these guys had available for the production but it was so low that the quality of the movie looked like a 10th minute episode for Youtube series. Movie narrative was messy and almost incomprehensible, jumping between irrelevant scenes that made no sense and special effects looked like they where made by a 17th year old who experiments on After Affects in his free time. Even the gunshots were made with cheap CGI instead of using blanks that would at least produce a believable combustion.

I was so dissapointed last night I wished the series had stopped at the 4th movie.

3/10 from me.

I think Coscarelli had nothing to do with the production of the Ravager. Thats why the failed outcome.

Oh please, Abrams had nothing to do with this low budget, steaming dump of incompetence. Screwing up franchises? If your definition of screwing up is taking franchises and injecting them with critical and financial success, then he's a big screw up. Star Trek was a bombing and floundering franchise which most of the public was indifferent to before Trek 09, unless you think a movie like Nemesis was gold and the series could go up from there. So no, I highly doubt Abrams had anything do with this movie, which looks like it had the production value of a YouTube video.

You'll get no argument from me there. Studios only care about money for the most part and they're in the game of milking franchises old and new right now. But getting back on the topic of this movie, it was an absolute mess. I could overlook the obvious budget shortcomings if it were more coherent. It was depressingly bad. It's sad that the franchise had to go out with this and Scrimm too. I thought Phantasm: IV Oblivion was really bad too, but this one was much worse. Looking back, you can see some of the same problems in Oblivion. The jumbled scenes of Mike just walking in the desert. Reggie shacking up with women, which ultimately goes nowhere. The anti-climactic nature of it all. The first Phantasm was a low budget classic, an interesting and unique horror movie that also feels like a snapshot of the 1970s. Part two ups the budget and action and throws in some humor and charm much like Evil Dead 2, its great fun. Those are the only real Phantasm movies to me. Part three feels a little bland and aimless, I could take it or leave it. I'll just pretend this one never existed.

This one was a bit different....I was expecting the worst and ended up not really minding it. It played like a mix of Oblivion and Bubba Ho Tep I thought ....I wish it didn't rely on CGI so much ....

Really good comparisons. I also agree they didnt need to do so much CGI, I guess it is cheaper but the others didnt rely on it.

I am hoping this last installment was put out because they wanted to get what they could from Angus before he died. Now they should make one with the remaining characters and finish the story. Use some CGI to have the fake Tallman, you dont have to use the tallman just use some spheres and someone who can recreate the voice well.

Exactly....I think the direction was the worst part for me....it just didn't feel like the other films ....same with the credits .....which have been consistent throughout the series ....it will probably grow on me....like all the sequels did...I like 2 and 3 a lot now and I was disappointed when they were first released... 4 was always flawed but pretty interesting to me ...and I still feel the same about it.

I agree huge disappointment, was almost unrecognizable as part of the series. What a waste of a great opportunity to make one last movie where now the actor of the tall man is dead

20 minutes in and I'm all kind of Ehh at all the callbacks and rehash. There's even a redo of the guitar song ffrom #1 😒, but at least that discordant ditty distracted me for a bit.

I'm glad I rented the vod instead of buying outright. I'm tempted to just skip to the Angus scenes and I hope his dewey looking is him as a scientist.

Well, I have 7 days to finish this even though the preview stills for the rest of the film aren't promising.
