Unfortunately disappointing

I won't say I hated it, and I will probably watch it again sometime, but it really didn't meet my expectations which were managed to begin with. I knew it wasn't going to be Coscarelli and I knew that corners would be cut in the budget department, but I expected something that had a bit more resonance (Phantasm pun there) and had a bit more charm. I also knew the end would be a bit of a cliffhanger, Phantasm style, but this just felt like it was chopped off without much consideration. The after-credit scene was pretty cringe-worthy and I wish they hadn't added it even though I liked seeing Rocky again. Overall the effects weren't uncharacteristically terrible (I mean, effects have never been the strongest part of Phantasm). The Tall Man was cool, as always, although I would have liked him to have more screen time. I kinda liked the different timeline aspects, feeling like they were doing a nod to Coscarelli's other work Bubba Hotep with Reg being in the nursing home. It starts getting very haphazard in the way it switches back and forth towards the end though. It seemed like they didn't have much of a plan. Ultimately, I guess I just wish they had a bit more interaction with the Tall Man and had devised a more clever ending. I gravitate towards feeling that if this is what we get then it's better than nothing, but at the same time I don't feel like it added much if anything to the canon. I am probably in the minority in that I think the 4th movie is the best of the sequels and love how it ended. I was hoping this would at least do something to expound upon that but it really didn't.

The movie was terrible and no send off for the series. But the acting by The Tall Man was top shelf worthy of any Lugosi performance. He was doing all kinds of great stuff with his eyes and facial expressions. I was impressed.

I wanted to like it a lot more than I actually did. Angus did steal the show (as usual) and it was great to see the whole gang one last time. I give this a very generous 5/10.

I thought it was okay, but it looked kind of cheap. Especially compared to the first four. It looked like a fan film compared to them. I understand it's a low budget movie and not a huge Hollywood blockbuster so I won't fault it too much. Also it seemed all over the place, like the story was going 6 different directions at once. But it was great seeing the cast together again. It felt as though we were uniting with old friends after many years and in a way that's exactly what it was. And the cast did a great job. Despite some flaws it was a fun movie and a great performance by Angus Scrimm as his last in the series.

It was so-so, they should of decided to go out emotionally or go all the way and fist fight the tall man or something. But it was half and half, I will certainly remember this film out of nostalgia for a long time, I wish Don Coscarelli had directed this last film and that they had given even more thought to the script, since they didnt have that much of a budget that was all they had, I wish more screenwriters had invested time and effort to make this film better, it was a very worthy story to tell. But in the end it was ok, I will take a lot of memories from it, it is like a whole part of my life ended and had closure.
