Casting nepotism

Notice how Meryl Streep keeps putting her kids in her movies. Can't they find work without her? Nepotism!

reply

Yeah, why would they think to cast her actual daughter in the role of: her daughter 

And if you check Mamie's filmography, she gets plenty of work in projects that aren't attached to her mother.

right, because that's what is really important in life. Wow.

does it matter that maybe she also possesses her mother's talents of being the greatest actress who ever lived?

reply

Who thinks Meryl Streep is "the greatest actress who ever lived"? You don't think that, do you? Seriously?

reply

She's never been great in my eyes in anything to be honest.

I was certainly pleased with these roles. I never seen The Iron Lady or The Manchurian Candidate but they're supposed to be good too.

reply

If your mother was Meryl Streep would you object?

reply

Yeah, but so what. She's a decent actor, and I'd put my kids in movies if I had the chance

reply

The movie rises or falls on Mamie's ability to act unselfconsciously. That's a risk the producers accepted, and if it works, who can better portray Mery's daughter? It's not like all the Julia Roberts movies where Lisa Roberts Gillen has a small part.

reply

Both of her daughters have acting resumes. Why wouldn't they cast one of them? They both look just like her and they can act.

reply

I think that they should implement a one-role-per-child policy in Hollywood. As a major movie actor, you can put each kid in one and only one of your movies. After that, they are on their own. There are too many talented young actors out there who never get a break because of nepotism.

reply

Her kids already have successful careers. It would be stupid to not have one of your actor daughters play your daughter if they were available.

reply

Really? Her daughters have "successful careers"? Doing what, exactly? Do you really think they would get any roles at all if it weren't for Mom?

reply

There are a lot of 2nd generation kids that try to act and can't. I agree they have a leg up, but no one is going to keep hiring them if they stink, even if they are Meryl Streep's kids. Mamie's resume looks typical for an actress starting out, as does Grace's. I saw Grace in The Newsroom and I thought she was good. I didn't know at first she was Meryl Streep's daughter.

reply

Second generation kids are not allowed to stink? How do you explain George W. Bush?

reply

I thought this was a real convo. 

I thought Mamie Gummer's characters in "The Good Wife" and "Emily Owens, M.D." were fantastic. Those had nothing to do with her mother. They were well-done and the casting of Ms. Gummer was spot-on.

reply

Wow...to say something so ignorant and actually lacking knowing, i.e. not knowing an actress's resume, on the IMDB message boards when with 2 clicks you would find out they have fine careers!

That would be a silly policy. How about the casting couch?
People have been doing favors for as long as there has been life on earth. It ain't gonna stop now or in Hollywood.

reply

It's a big turn off when actors put their kids in their films or hand them movie careers like it's their birthright or something.

Tom Hank's kid, Demi Moore's kids, Meryl Streep's kid....it's sickening....especially considering they all have no natural talent.

reply

None of these celebrity kids would be anywhere if it weren't for nepotism. Meryl Streep's daughter is just plain ugly. In contrast, Meryl Streep was astonishingly attractive at that age. Let's face it, looks are everything when you are an actor.

reply

You would think with all that money and privilege, these kids would choose to get the best education they can and aspire for non entertainment careers of their own and make their own way in life.

When I see celebrity kids go that route I admire them for choosing their own path in life. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any really famous celebs whose kids purposely chose their own careers and got an education completely unrelated to the entertainment business....though i'm sure there are many.

reply

Wouldn't that be amazing if a celebrity kid used his/her money and privilege to become a scientist, engineer, teacher or physician? Oh wait, that might actually be useful. Who wants to do something that is useful for the world like be an engineer?

reply

or being on imdb bitching about completely unimportant things because theres nothing else going on in their lives

reply

Another ad hominem attack from another Meryl Streep fan! Do you know what an ad hominem attack is? It is an example of poor rhetoric. Rather than addressing the actual comments that I am making about nepotism, you employ the (much easier) strategy of making personal attacks against me (in this case, implying that I have "nothing going on" in my life). Can't you come up with anything better than an ad hominem attack?

reply

I swear to God if you say ad hominem one more time... you douchey, douchey pretentious douuuuuuchhhhhhhhhe.

No they're not. But anyways, her character was distraught and not taking care of herself. She was also the daughter of Meryl's character. I think she had the perfect looks to fill the role. She's SUPPOSED to look rough because she feels rough. And she looks just like her mom so she was perfectly cast as the daughter. She is also a very good actress so I think that's the most important thing.

Mammie Gummer may be a good actress, like so many others, but if she were to find job without mom's power she could no do it due to her ugliness. Let's face it.

reply

As far as I'm concerned, I don't care who they choose for roles. If actors want to put their kids in some roles, that's fine with me. Hell, I remember watching reruns of MASH in the 90s growing up, Alan Alda on the lead and his father Robert Alda were in a few episodes and Alan's brother Antony Alda was in the one show at the aid station where father & son in roles Dr. Borelli & Hawkeye bucked heads and Antony as the medic confronted the two of them.

My point: If they get the job done like this mother & daughter did, Gold star casting. Complaints about nepotism are so ridiculous it's unreal.

yeah, but there are also examples of celebrity kids who never got a break. clint eastwood's daughter never really hit it big, the career of robert redford's daughter never really even got off the ground. then there are the much more common celebrity kids that have huge careers because they inherited real talent-bruce dallas howard, robert downey jr., kiefer sutherland, liza minelli...the list goes on and on...

reply

I said the very same thing when Henry Fonda cast his daughter in On Golden Pond...How dare he take the role away from a more capable actress.

Don't embarrass yourself with that scenario. I'm not a huge fan, but I know that, Jane Fonda, prior to that movie, had won a Oscar and many other awards for years and years for various roles. She was not some nobody who had not proven herself as an actress over and over again in roles that had nothing to do with her family.
