PAPER TOWNS' first 20 minutes belong to the "Several crazy situations in 1 night" sub-genre. Then it becomes a mix between mystery and regular teen drama until the 1-hour mark, when it becomes a road movie. Actually, the scene where the characters decide to drive across the country feels like the "This is where the plot really begins" moment that's always used in trailers. Why does a movie this uneven work? Because QUENTIN "Q" JACOBSON and his friends BEN, RADAR and LACEY are irresistibly likeable characters (each one for different reasons). No, I'm not just saying that because I couldn't resist to sing along to the POKEMON theme with them. When teenagers in movies talk like children or even pre-teens, it's sad. When they talk like adults, it's forced. When they talk like young adults (like they should), it's a display of maturity. Here, the dialogue goes from deep reflexions to witty jokes to pop culture allusions without feeling unrealistic.

Luego se vuelve una mezcla de misterio y drama adolescente normal hasta que pasa 1 hora, cuando se convierte en una road movie. De hecho, la escena en donde los personajes deciden viajar a través del país se siente como el momento «Aquí es donde la trama realmente comienza» que siempre se usa en los tráilers. ¿Por qué una película así de desequilibrada funciona? Porque QUENTIN «Q» JACOBSON y sus amigos BEN, RADAR y LACEY son personajes irresistiblemente agradables (cada uno por razones distintas). No, no estoy diciendo esto solo porque no pude resistir a cantar el tema de POKEMÓN con ellos. Cuando los adolescentes en películas hablan como niños o incluso pre-adolescentes, es triste. Cuando hablan como adultos, es forzado. Cuando hablan como adultos jóvenes (como deberían), es una muestra de madurez. Aquí, los diálogos pasan de ser reflexiones profundas a bromas ingeniosas a alusiones a la cultura pop sin sentirse poco realistas.
