Makes disaster movies respectable
he emotional touches of The Wave elevate it from standard disaster porn dreck, but there is an undeniable boiler plate element that robs the film of series impact. It’s admirable that the film is deliberately taking the standard beats for a tale like this to show that you can still tell a familiar story with an affecting impact — but did it all have to be so familiar? Then again, I’d much rather watch a film like this then see another San Andreas (by the way, they’re making San Andreas 2; congratulations, no one!) The Wave doesn’t reinvent or even improve on the disaster movie, but it does make the disaster movie more palatable. It won’t sweep you away, but it won’t leave you all wet either: http://www.cutprintfilm.com/reviews/the-wave/
