Very good, would have been better... (SPOILERS)

...without the disaster movie cliches

1. Nobody believes the one who sees it coming
2. Self-imperiling kid
3. Barely outrunning the disaster (water, rubble, magma, wind, supercold air etc.) - running away from water in hotel scene
4. Selfish, panicking fellow survivor endangers main characters
5. Person looking for family in destroyed landscape stumbles across them
6. Nick of time rescue (rushing water accelerates just as he learns their location)
7. Revival of person thought dead

Can a disaster movie be made without these? I think so. All it needs are characters you care about and a plausible, scary disaster.

I think disaster movies have to have those clichés, no matter the overall quality of the film itself.

I watched this today on Netflix (subtitled version) and was very pleasantly surprised. Nicely photographed, more than decent performances and pretty good (if you squint a little) special effects. I expected to turn it off in about 15 minutes in, but stayed till the soggy end.

Only SFX is good. Hollywood will never make movies with such bad acting and writing.

Ha. Right :)

Let's not forget the 'stand still and watch your impending doom for a couple of minutes when you should be RUNNING' moments. The woman getting her leg stuck after the car rolled back was clumsily edited and devoid of any suspense.
