Why is Belle called Betty in the film?

Ruta Gedmintas is credited as 'Belle' but she's only ever referred to as 'Betty' in the film?
I've read the book and I'm pretty sure James never once called Belle 'Betty'!
Whats going on there?

reply

I'm pretty sure it used to say "Betty" before so someone must have wrongly changed it. But anyway, I could understand why they would want to create a new fictional character and distance themselves from "Belle" in the books since she allegedly had an affair with James stepfather. http://catdailynews.com/2015/02/drama-surrounding-bob-the-cat/

Yeah I'm aware that Belle had an affair with James' dad which made me think that they used 'Betty' as an alternative character.
Belle wasn't a girl who lived next door to James, she was a long time friend wasn't she?

reply

Exactly, she was a long time friend. Also I haven't seen the film yet but I heard that the "Betty" character is a veterinary nurse or something which doesn't fit in with Belle either.

She had an affair (allegedly) with james's stepfather, not his dad. I doubt james even knows his stepfather very well, his mother seems to get through husbands quite quickly, i think she'd only been with this one eight years or something, so. James probably hardly knew him, as he hadn't had much contact with his mother during that period. belle seems to have given him quite a lot of support during the time he was a recovering addict, and helped with bob etc, so i think she should be given credit for that.

reply

i think it's some sort of compulsion to have a love interest in every film, as though no film could function without one. So they've created a fictional love interest for james, instead of having Belle, who was just a friend by that time, according to the book.

reply

But why was Belle called Betty in the film yet called Belle in the credits?

reply

Belle and Betty are two separate characters in the movie. I don't know why Joanne Froggatt is listed as 'Val', as in the movie she plays Belle, the support worker and Ruta Gedmintas plays Betty, the neighbour. There is no Val in the movie and the Belle is a completely separate character from the books.

reply

The support worker is called Val in the movie. The neighbour is Betty. There is no Belle in the movie.

It's OK everyone...She's now credited as Betty.
That's a shame really. I'd liked to have known more about Belle but if she's not up for the limelight and the money and would rather have an affair with someone she thinks has more money than her boyfriend then fine.
