Before all the hate...

...I think this will determine the opinion of Pixar and sequels. So far we have the Toy Story sequels that everyone (mostly) loves. And Monsters U, which was pretty well accepted, and Cars 2, which most people didn't like. I think if Cars 3 comes back somehow, then Cars 2 can just be the anomaly.

On the other hand, we should have Finding Dory and possibly Incredibles 2 before this, so I think how those do will also impact it all.

Basically, my point is...I hope this one is awesome. I've enjoyed all Pixar films in theaters so far, and I want to keep looking forward to them!!

I truly hope you are right about this but I can't put that much faith in a third cars movie

I agree. I'm really, really trying to give Cars 3 the benefit of the doubt, but my confidence in it is not very high.

Unless of course they make some kinda musical fantasy sic-fi dramedy historical epic out it in which case 11 thumbs up!

Okay, time for make-believe.

Cars 3. The first underwater trans-Atlantic train system is built. Mater is hired by the Queen of England because of Cars 2. Of course, things go terribly wrong, and McQueen and friends has to fix his mistakes until the end of the movie. Pit stop.

Of course, somewhere along the line, we have a cameo from the star of the new Disney trilogy, Trains. I'm sure Crush would cameo in there underwater as well, looking at one of the trains while saying "Choo-choo ca-choo." And...why not, the Underminer cameos in the background during digging/construction of the site as well.

Cars 3 board not getting much love! I figured this would be the busiest one, if only with 100k 'stop, just, stop' posts.

I am actually quite surprised as well (thus the name of my thread!!). On the other hand, I thought it was very smart for them to announce it alongside Incredibles 2. Seems to have kept the backlash pretty non-existent so far.

I actually didn't hate cars 2, I don't think it was bad or awful or anything, I just didn't think it needed to be done. But I will give 3 a small chance.

I feel the same. I feel that the fact that it was rushed made it suffered (same with Brave). Plus, I feel it didn't connect on an emotional level like Pixar films usually do. Otherwise, I still thought it was a fun spy/action movie.

I think Pixar pushed too fast, and there was a domino effect, so I'm glad they are taking this year to catch back up with themselves. Hopefully it will reflect in the upcoming films!

Cars should have been the next season in the piston cup. Mcqueen is doing good and then doc passes away. He struggles with this by giving into the limelight again. Since cars 1 was a ripoff of doc hollywood, this could be like a rocky 3 ripoff. For the record the first cars movie was brilliant and the fact the plot was doc hollywood is not a bash from me.

I Would Kill for a Cars prequel

reply

That could be one way of trying to make it work better than Cars 2. But there's not a lot of backstory to tell, because McQueen was just a rookie in the original and we already know what happened with Doc, Mater and the town back in the day.

The town's history would be a bad idea, because that was basically the point of the first film. Mater already has all the Tall Tales and Cars 2, so I hope a prequel wouldn't be about him (not to mention we already know a lot of his story).

McQueen could have a prequel. Imagine him racing as a youngster, watching Doc on TV and wanting to be like him. Of course, Mater wouldn't be with him, so that seems less likely. Also, that already sounds like Mike from MI.

I don't know. Using Toy Story as an example, I've enjoyed the shorts/special as well as the trilogy. However, I think there is a major difference in story quality between the shorts and the features. Cars 2 felt like more of a special than a feature. As such, I still enjoyed it, but it lacked the polish of a feature (although I still believe Cars 2 was the result of a domino effect that started around 2009 and hopefully is finally broken with them taking a year off)

I just watched the new short 'Radiator Springs 500 1/2' which was typically beautiful but with a very weak story… rimshot jokes and all. It's far from feature film news, but not indicator that their story game is one it's way back up. Godd thing is, my hopes aren;t getting any higher so I'll not have much to loose come release day.

Oh yeah, I haven't had a chance to watch that yet, but I'm not surprised. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

The only positive thing I can think of is that Inside Out, Good Dino, Unkrich's film, Dory and Incredibles 2 could/should all come out before this. Also, maybe Mark Andrews' and Teddy Newton's films (although it's possible that one of those is actually Cars 3 ).

Exactly I'd like to see Lightning's life before the fame, the discovery, and maybe the first race.

First Cars was good flick, I liked it better than Bug's Life myself.

However, Cars 2 was a bad movie, period.

Hopefully there will be less focus on Mater, and what focus there will be will be less obnoxious. I'm hoping for a shift away from all the over the top violent spy action stuff too.

People can hate Cars 2 all they want. My kids loved it and if my kids love a movie, we go see it, possibly twice, buy the blu ray, buy the XBox game and buy tons of merchandise for it. As do millions of other families like mine.

If we adults don't like it, who cares? It makes Pixar a ton of money. Check out your local Toy R Us and see how the Cars franchise is doing. It's dumb for Pixar not to pump out more movies. My kids will want to see a Cars 3, 4, etc. And I'll take them.

I care about entertaining my kids. I could care less if I think it sucks. It's nice when a Cartoon is entertaining to me (Wreck-It Ralph, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs come to mind) but it sure isn't necessary.

I see your point, but it comes from a very limited viewpoint, which is quite unfair to the genre. People see animated films as "kids movies" as you clarify here:

See, that's great for you if that's how you view animation. However, animation is NOT exclusively a kids-only medium. Pixar has worked hard to make (most of) their films enjoyable for everyone, not just children. Sadly, many animated films just churn out generic BS with lots of toys that entertain the kids for a few minutes before adding to the local landfill.

But those of us who have enjoyed Pixar films as films (not 90-minute "babysitters"*) do hope to enjoy the film's plot and characters.

*keep in mind, that is not an insult to your parenting, just a comment on perceived purpose of the film.
