I really thought they'd leave it at Car 2. I didn't find Car2 terrible (I've seen a lot worse) but it was extremely random. Best guess is that whilst they were brainstorming the plot someone said 'hey what kind of thing do you relate cars to?' And some came up with Mr. Bond's DB5 which is where the spy theme came into play.
After cars 2 been a bit of a flop I thought they play it safe and move onto the planes movie (although I have mixed feelings on that sequel)
But I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm optimistic that this movie won't have an awful storyline because I do like the characters and the whole world of car in general and Pixar will be looking to redeem them selves... (In this instance anyway)

I'm with you there. Well, apparently they had the spy concept in the first film as a TV show or something (I forget the exact details), but it got cut. So when they were thinking about the sequel, they decided to go with that.

Just for clarity, the Planes films are Disney alone, no Pixar. Cars 3 will be Pixar. As for the Planes movie, that is planned to be a trilogy with the second film coming out this year. I would expect the third film next year, before Cars 3 comes out.
I really hope they make a good film here. If their next films are amazing with good sequels, perhaps Cars 2 can just be the one weird one that people don't like.

There's just not much to tell with the cars world and characters as is. It's a huge world inhabited entirely by vehicles, but it's really just parallel to our own, with nothing alluring to explore; The characters are interesting but none of their stakes are very high at this point. I can't see them coming with anything much more intriguing than 'they travel the world and get involved in a spy plot'. Toy Story was different because you always had the aging/abandonment issues to work with. Incredibles 2 has possibilities too because it's about ordinary family life under extraordinary circumstances. But I just don't see anything like that with Cars. To make it work they'll have to totally spin off one of the characters and really make you care about them, but I don't see that happening because McQueen and Mater is where the box office and merchandise $$ are at.
Otterprods, to keep those aquatic Mustelidae in line.

Indeed. And (as I mention in the other thread on here), I think there are some ideas for a McQueen prequel type thing, but you'd lose most of the toys (a.k.a characters) and that wouldn't likely appeal to those writing the paychecks.

I see people talking about this film like it's the Shawshank Redemption but it's just a children's film, my son loves both Cars and Cars 2 equally as he will love Cars 3. They are fun, innocent, educational (at times) and entertaining and that is all I ask of a children's film.
