WHY WHY WHY??????

Firstly I think it's important to acknowledge that I have always been an enormous Pixar fan, they will always be thought of a a true game changer, and 'Toy Story' can be seen as nothing less than a milestone in cinematic history, which can proudly stand shoulder to shoulder which other iconic titles such as 'Star Wars', 'The Lord of the Rings' & 'Avatar', to name a few.

The trouble with so much success is that it sets a high expectation on future projects, so it is only natural that there will be disappointments. It is when such a 'blip' comes along there are no lessons learned. When 'Cars' was released in 2006, although a competent and entertaining movie, that also had moderate financial success, it was how ever seen as dip in form for the animation giant. There was no real reason not to make a sequel. So 'Cars 2' was produced and released in 2011, on the back of three of their most successful and critically acclaimed titles, 'Wall-E', 'Up' and 'Toy Story 3'. 'Cars 2' was the studios darkest hour. Taking $370m worldwide only 'A Bugs Life' at $363m had taken less, however as it had cost $80m less to produce was still more financially successful. Cars 2 was also the most worst received critically, and as of August 2016 had only achieved a rating 6.3 on IMDB, the only tital to dip below 7.0.

Why then would Pixar consider a further sequel? This could prove to be the first ever title to struggle to make a profit. It seems perhaps that the originality that made Pixar great has faded taking the polish off the company slightly. Maybe under Disney control their creativity has become stifled. Should Cars 2 prove the disaster that most fear, it could spell the first signs that such a important a great company could start to unravel.

I think you forgot about The Good Dinosaur. That is, by far, Pixar's biggest financial flop.

It's being made because Disney makes a *beep* of money on Cars Merchandises.
