Boy, McQueen looks like a bigger wreck than Zack Snyder.

Could it be possible that Pixar is finally trying to put emotional depth into their only series that exists solely for merchandising?

That's probably what they are trying to do, even though the first film was quite emotional too - just not in the same depth with the rest of Pixar's movies.
I think Lasseter's choice to not direct this one was the right one. Maybe his love for the franchise had an adverse effect on it...

I think this has the potential to be the highest-rated film in the series, scoring a low-to-mid 80s on RottenTomatoes.

If we're lucky, then the Cars trilogy could be to Pixar what the Wolverine trilogy is to superhero movies. One crap, one a little more exciting and one surprisingly good.

IMO the first film's attempts to be emotional and heartwarming were preachy and superficial, and the only genuine sadness I get from it is that Paul Newman and Joe Ranft died around the same time.

Yep. Pretty much the only Pixar franchise I want him to stay away from. I just hope they end the series here. This dead cow's not been milking for years.

I'd say Alex Proyas since his latest venture was a worse film than BVS.
