Mathew Perry is one of those actors... I caught this show at a friends house, and would have rather watched an anti-acne informercial. Matthew Perry always acts like Chandler Bing in everything he does on TV. He's rather boring to watch.
In Aaron Sorkin's "Studio 60 on the sunset strip" he was quite different than his role on Friends and he did a pretty good job. He was also good in his minor role in the tv show "The good wife", where he played a sociopathic, smug character. I also found him enjoyable in the romantic comedy movie "Fools rush in" with Salma Hayek, although his character was very similar to Chandler Bing. He was also very good in the small independent film "Numb", where he played a character who suffers from depersonalization disorder and played it with subtlety, managing to be charming and convincing.
But in the first two seasons of "The odd couple", which I don't like at all, it was as if he was trying so hard not to imitate Walter Matthau and at the same time not repeat his Chandler Bing patterns that he did not act at all, he just stood there yelling his lines. In the promo of the third season that I saw, he now acts exactly the same as Chandler Bing. I think he is a good actor in general, both in comedic and dramatic roles, but "The odd couple" is a mess. He seems undecided on how to play the character, because the character itself lacks depth, just as the other characters on this mess of a show. Sorry for bashing it, but it's just an honest opinion.
I really like Matthew Perry but I would truly agree with you on this.
I like the show and it appears the actor playing Felix is somewhat carrying the show as he really shines in his role.
Perry, on the other hand appears to be just "showing up" and it's a shame because this is his opportunity to prove to audiences he's not a one-trick pony and can really step out of his "Friends" stereo-type, but doesn't appear to be working.
Totally agree about the first 2 seasons, he seemed uncomfortable in the role. It did seem like in this first episode of the season he was a lot more Chandler-like and the show was WAY better for it. Maybe at first he was trying not to do Bing? I think he excels at that sarcastic, overly-expressive comedy, though, so I'm all for it.
