felix is gay

this show makes a lot more sense if you consider felix as gay

best so far this year:
The Revenant (2015)
A Gorgeous Girl Like Me (1972)

he's like alan harper (two and a half men) and raj (The big bang theory) many hints of being gay but they never outright say it and they still chase after women

reply

Metrosexual.

Metrosexual.

Haha! I came to write the same comment. He is not gay. He is more like a Metrosexual. Too much attention to his appearance.

reply

He kind of reminds me more of Pee Wee Herman. Metrosexuals look like they stepped out of GQ; this guy looks like he stepped out of a time machine wearing his gay uncle's clothes.

reply

If Felix is gay, he'd be written as gay.

reply

Well, Felix may not be gay, but certainly many folks who saw how he and Oscar behaves think that they are. And there's quite a bit of scenes of the pair dealing with those who think that they are gay throughout the two series - unlike the original OC, which was more subtle in its portrayals.

I don't know how familiar you are with the 1970 version of the show. The network had a huge "gay problem" with the show. They had to add the whole backstory of being "two divorced men" and "arriving at the home of his childhood friend" to the opening credits to make sure it was established that they were not gay.

By today's standards, I'm really surprised they didn't make the new Felix gay.

Yes, Garry Marshall had spoken about this several times during interviews. Much to his frustration, ABC scrutinized each script in order to ensure there was no hint of homosexuality in the story line.

One writing challenge involved an ABC-requested standard of introducing a female "date" for either Oscar or Felix within every [X] number of episodes, in order to reassure & remind audiences that both leads were heterosexual. Marshall said this presented a plot nuisance that the writers frequently had to work around, as the most humorous situations usually didn't involve transient characters, but, rather the two core leads and cast "regulars".

Why is it that men who are prim, proper, and polite are immediately labelled gay? As if those are the criteria for being homosexual moreso than, you know, being attracted to other men.

reply

so lazy straight men can excuse themselves from being all those things. they can lean over to their girlfriend and say, see that's why i don't help you clean up, because that's what gay men do. i'm manly
