Lobster

In the first episode we see Mrs Rogers cook lobster which she then throws into the big pit outside where the seagulls were circling. I thought that maybe someone was down there and she was 'feeding' them! Now we know there wasn't. So why did she do this? Is it explained in the book?

reply

This is something that they never discuss in the book. I think it was added to this series to perhaps throw people a red herring?

reply

Didn't she just get rid of the empty lobster shells after she took what she needed before the souffle?

Yes, that's it. It was just an excuse to show this incredibly cinematic island pit.
Although I did suspect that they were going to bend the story a bit & perhaps have Armstrong fall in there to his death, instead drown. Would've been quite morbid, and therefore fiiting, I suppose.

No it wasn't red herrings she was throwing it was lobsters! lol.

I must admit I thought the same, that someone was down in the pit and now feel quite stupid for thinking that, I think it was to make you wonder if there was someone else on the island apart from those in the house.

Perhaps she just threw food scraps/garbage into the pit. Otherwise, Fred Narracott would have to transport it back to the mainland.

reply

Because it looked so sinister.

Isn't the large cratered pit where Dr. Armstong's body is discovered at the end of Episode 3? Two of the characters go down to the beach and then have to climb up a treacherous rock facing to discover the doctor's body face down in a pool of murky water, covered with seaweed.

The implication here is that the doctor snuck out in the middle of the night to meet the murderer and the murderer shoved the drunken doctor off the edge of the cliff.

It is far clearer in the 1945 film.

^^^My thoughts exactly. Also, it did make for a very sinister shot.

I think it's just because, being an isolated offshore island, there is no garbage pickup and she has to dispose of extra food somehow. So she dumps it in the pit and lets the animals get it. Which might be even better for the environment than going into a garbage landfill.

It looks like there is a tidal run at the bottom of the pit with a 'cave' leading back out the sea. Armstrong might have been pushed into the pit, had his body dragged out and ended up on the rocks by the beach.
