Questions about the hospital

How did Joel, Ellie and Darlene all end up at the same hospital?
Out of all the dozens of hospitals in that part of the country, Joel and Ellie just happen to be at the right one?

Why didn't Darlene take Ellen there?
Odd that she she sends Ellen there with Joel and does not join them.

During the part where Joel is going psycho and murdering everyone, again, to get Ellie in the hospital he walks past a sign pointing the way to, "Pediatric surgery."
I find that curious that in a pretty empty hospital where they could have used any OR they still followed protocol of working on Ellie in the specific one.

Interesting how Darlene just happens to be in the parking garage when Joel with Ellie is there.

Sheer luck or was it the plot?

Yes, it is odd, from our - outside - perspective, as sitting in front of the TV, watching a show.

However, in universe, I think I can provide you two reasons for why the Fireflies / team of doctors did it that way.

First is practical. As damaged as the hospital is, the procedure they are about to perform is dependent on specific medical equipment. They might be missing or damaged, but either way the best chance to find at least some of the necessary stuff is at that particular location inside the hospital.

The second reason is psychological. Things were not normal in the last 23 years for the main characters. So at every single chance they get, they try to bring normalcy into their daily lives. That includes respecting what remains "from before". The before-people, who designed the hospital, assigned an area to preform surgeries on children. So they will use that, because that shows respect towards the past and also psychologically it comforts them to do it that way. It gives them hope that things could be normal again sometime. That is how I would explain it. And this second point adds the irony that they are outright murdering a child tryting to bring back the world to normal...

I thought about the first one but was not sure what equipment that OR would have that another one would not.
Suppose a bunch of stuff is missing or damaged in the child's OR.
If everything they have or need is in an adult OR then it would be easier to operate on her in that one.

I can agree with the second one that makes sense.

It also gives Joel the place to find her easily.

Maybe it's not as clear on the show. In the game, Marlene is mortally wounded and asks Joel and Tess, who are smugglers, to lead Ellie to a firefly outpost outside the Boston Quarantine Zone. Joel and Tess run into dead fireflies. Joel and Ellie go to Tommy who might know where to find other Fireflies. Who then sends the two to Colorado where they find an abandoned Fireflies lab and notes about regrouping at the Utah hospital.

Marlene survived and as the leaders of the Firefly, she's at the current HQ at the Utah hospital.

I missed some details or don't remember everything so if what you mentioned happened in the show, that helps.

I still don't get it why Marlene would have left Boston and gone to the hospital in Utah.

reply

Because the Fireflies in Boston got destroyed by FEDRA. This is why Marlene is wounded and why the fireflies outpost outside the QZ are all dead.
