Ellie is immune to the virus. Joel takes her across the country to a hospital in Seattle to where they think doctors will use her to find a cure. The problem with that is in the virus grows on the brain so in order to find a cure they will have to murder Ellie. Joel doesn’t want to lose, what he considers to be, another daughter so he kills the doctors and escapes the hospital with Ellie and he takes Ellie back to live with Tommy in a town made to run like a pre-pandemic town and they live happily ever after.
That is until of course a few years later the daughter of the murdered doctor seeks revenge and comes back to, brutally, murder Joel.
