This show is hard to follow

Not read the books, but at this point (at least for people who haven't read the books) the answer to all of your questions is "we don't know". I don't see this as a problem as I'm assuming that we'll learn more in later episodes.

No tears please, it's a waste of good suffering.

Reading the books might help a bit but remember this is a retelling so it will not be to the original story line and a lot has been changed.

Many of those questions are just mysteries that are being solved and answered as the series progresses rather than confusing material.

If you read the books you'll end up even more confused because practically nothing is the same other than the character and place names.

While I agree with you, last weeks episode was the best so far in advancing the plot. Obviously the little girl can turn people into stone. Lucas at some point was one of those soldiers. The Tin man is going to fall for the princess. The LGBT chick is still pissed.

I don't see those things as confusing but as mysteries that we are discovering with the following episodes. For now, we know that the girl can do magic and probably turn those people to stone before she know they were bad people. Lucas explicitly asked her not to do magic.

Speculation: West said than Mother South was the mother of all the witches. She died a while ago and I think the girl is too little to be South daughter (Tip seems too young too). So I think another witch had daughters too. Perhaps the little one is Glinda daughter, while Tip could be East daughter.
