Mind-numbingly bad show

I couldn't get past the first thirty minutes of the first episode without dozing off. I was bored out of my skull. 38% RT rating was much too generous. Can't believe 38% of critics actually liked this pile of doo doo. I was hoping at least the effects would give it some redeeming value, but they are just as horridly bad as the acting and story. I have no interest whatsoever in even finishing the first episode. It's almost comical how bad it is.

Bye then. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I simply am not there...

reply

i don't see what is so bad about the show. other than the fact that the plot doesn't move along very much (it seems), i rather enjoy this show.

reply

Well, it's not for everyone.

Singh has a certain style and either you get it or you don't.

But as I've posted before Emerald City is not the kind of show to be viewed week-to-week with commercial interruptions.

Those elements are momentum killers for this kind of show.

I've decided to binge-watch the show 3 episodes at a time and so far it's been a much better experience.

This article is from long before Singh signed on the show. The things that killed it were present before he was, and NBC did nothing to improve on it, save for renaming Henry.

Why is depressing always bad? If the source material already is grimm, then why should it always be reworked into happy, fluffy puppydog stories?

You shouldn't compare it with the 1930's version, but on it's own, like Tin Man.

reply

It.....ISN'T grim.

And, I am comparing it to the books.

reply

I'm sorry if I used the wrong choice of words, English isn't my native language. Maybe dark, moody or depressing is better.

But my point is; not everything has to be happy-go-lucky and peachy. I can imagine that with the state of the world today you could try to find escapism in happy places, but not all of us want it that way.

reply

And why is it necessary for people who want 'grimdark' emo crap to rip apart light-hearted classics?

I suspect it's because they suffer from a 'lack of vision' and can't create anything original on their own. The fact that their reworked alternative tellings are usually garbage rather proves the point.

reply

I'm not ripping on the movie, it's just not for me. You can look at it all you want, as long as I don't have to watch it. Just like with The Wiz, not my cup of tea either, but that has more to do that I loath musicals, I hate it when people start to sing for no good reason (irony has it I've been a singer in rock bands for a long time). Tin Man is more like it for me, but I love this tone.

But to each their own.

reply

I'm talking about the BOOKS, the absolute source material.

Could there be a more hipster-esque statement?

Could there be a more hipster-esque statement?

It was an honest comment.

If you were familiar with any of Singh's previous films you'd already know that his work usually gets mixed reactions.

Almost of all the reviews for Emerald City mention that factor.

And most of the posts on the board bare that out: for every poster who hates it there is a poster who likes/loves it.

God, there's no need to be rude.

You were the one being rude mate, implying you need to "get it". There is nothing to get.

This show is just plain bad. Nothing makes sense. She lives next door to her real mother but never ever talked to her? Even the dog isn't acting like any kind of dog I've ever seen! The show is an endless non-sequitur in a world filled with psychos.

reply

You're expending an awful lot of energy on a show you despise. Why not just watch one you enjoy? I wish I had time to watch some shows that I only "quite" like. I certainly don't have time to waste on those I don't.

No tears please, it's a waste of good suffering.

reply

I shall expend my infinite levels of energy as I wish!

If I decide to stomp all over this meandering, miserable mishmash of malignant modern material, then I shall indeed!

This is what I originally wrote:

That's not being rude, that's just making a statement.

Everyone has different tastes. Not every tv show is for everyone.

If you don't like it don't watch it.

He was being rude.

And I'm not your MATE!
