The Wizard is ...

Jealous. He doesn't hate magic, he hates he can't do it. A woman was his boss and he resented her. He goes someplace where he thinks his science would make him a god to the primitive locals and a woman uses magic to outdo him. In Oz it appears only women can be witches, so out of jealousy and spite he called himself a wizard to compensate for his lack of actual magic. Now we find out his science didn't stop the beast forever, it was apparently magic, since only magic users are trapped in the prison where the key to him controlling the giants is.

Interesting point. Definitely reinforced by episode 6.

"Jealous" is a very mild term to describe the wizard. He is a power-hungry psychopath with immense issues towards women. He hated that back in Kansas, Jane was his boss, and that all the magic-wielding witches in Oz are women - like Nahara, East, West, and so on. He banished all magic, in other words, anyone who could oppose him. He brainwashed East (who imprisoned people defying the Wizard's orders in the Prison of the Abject) and West (who is happy to be an addict who runs a brothel). However, it sounds like Glinda was the only one who was smart enough to play the long game with a hope to outwitting the Wizard.

He has currently asked Lady Ev to mass produce a weapon whose only function is to kill people, especially those whose power he doesn't have.
