Hate for this seems disproportionate (genre shows and evaluating quality

Hey everybody,

In fantasy, sci-fi, or otherwise fantastical fiction that operates outside the confines of what we could see in the real world, do you have a sliding scale by which you judge these shows? Is a quality superhero movie, for example, a good movie for what it is, or is it a good movie period like The Godfather or The Departed?

I'm only asking these things because the hate for shows like this seem rather disproportionate to me at times. It's not amazing, sure, but it's not the complete trash you'd think if you listened to a lot of the people here. I think somewhere along the way expectations got really high due to the rising quality of TV in general, and the problem is that for genre fare like this it's an unrealistic lens to view through.

It seems to me that the internet tends towards the negative, and IMDb even more so. This show in particular dares to have a female lead, which appears to annoy many insecure guys.

No tears please, it's a waste of good suffering.

Personally, I've been looking forward to this show for a year so it's extra disappointing when it turns out bad. Plus it has a good premise. Most stuff that's on TV doesn't even get my hopes up so there's less chance for disappointment. It was the same with "Once upon a time": hugely promising but so badly made. If I take one look at the story or just the poster and see that it's crap, I'll just ignore it, it's the stuff that could have been good that is really annoying.
