I haven't seen him in other dramatic roles but if this is any indication, he should definitely stick to comedy. His overacting especially in the very dramatic scenes is cringeworthy stuff.

Stick to your strengths, David. This isn't your caper.

You know it makes sense.

Absolutely spot on. One of the worst case of "miscast" I've ever seen!

ITA. But then so is Raine. She is so one-note in everything she does. It was a relief when she left Midwife.
