Ooh, Ouch
I had no idea who Shane Dawson was before watching the Chair, but I was rooting for him to make a good film. I like the guy, but this movie has no redeeming qualities for me. It's like someone shouting in my face and then bursting out in laughter at my reaction over and over again.
I liked Cheramie, too bad Shane couldn't keep up with her. I liked Drew too, but like Shane he is funnier in the show than in the movie. In the movie he crossed the line from creepy to rapey.
The cinematography is non existent. Hollidaysburg actually has its own feel to it visually, but Not Cool is just bland. Wasn't Shane going for a resemblance to Can't Hardly Wait? A good digital photographer should be able to mask a movie's low budget somewhat.
I'm happy Shane was able to live out his dream and make a movie, but I don't think he made a good one. 1/10, Sorry man.
Edit: Just watched the last episode of The Chair. I like both first time directors, so it's hard to see only one winner, but I suspected that Shane made his movie with tunnel vision for his youtube audience only.
After watching the final episode of The Chair, it's pretty clear he worked that audience of his to get that $250,000. Crafty guy.
