Preferred the kemps version

Although a little corny now I liked it better than this one...

It really is odd which opinions people think merit a new thread.

Yeah really strange to compare the only two jest films made..

Only two jest films ... what?

If you are suggesting that there have only been two Kray movies made, then you are incorrect - the film "The Rise of The Krays" was released at the same time as "Legend" and of course the Kemps' Krays movie has been around a while now.

I think when the Kemps sing "True" in "The Krays" was great.

Somewhere between my long winded oratory and the banality of the troll there must be some happy medium. Preferably in Cockney.

Too funny!

But I can see I still have a lot of homework to do.

To be a Cockney you have to've been born within the sound of the pealing of the bells of the church of St. Mary's~at~Bow in Whitechapel.
Search :"Oranges and Lemons{sing the Bells of St. Clements}",then listen to the (Victorian)song on Youtubey~doobie[Bros]. You'll like it.
What a fine lady you are. Have you ever "ridden on a horse to Banbury Cross"? Of course she was really a Ffiennes lady(as in Joseph and Ranulph)-pronounced "Rafe",a wealthy Oxfordshire aristocrat family, from whom those two thesps are descended

Don't tell me there's a SCARIER nursery rhyme than this one:

When will you pay me?" say the Bells of Old Bailey
"When I grow rich" say the Bells of Shoreditch
"When will that be?" say the Bells of Stepney
"I do not know" say the Great Bells of Bow
"Here comes a Candle to light you to Bed
Here comes a Chopper to Chop off your Head
Chip chop chip chop - the Last Man's Dead."

I have to admit, even as a little girl who loved old-school nursery rhymes and had her own Mother Goose nursery rhyme book (which that poem was in) that did kind of freak me out as a kid---thought it was gross, lol. Saw Legend, and thought it was good---liked the recreation pf the era, and Tom Hardy near tour do force performance as both brothers, which was intense and remarkable.

reply

Ah the Kemps version, I quite liked that one actually largely thanks to Billie Whitelaw's presence as their mumsy. Don't forget the Piranha Brothers, nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more

I can't say, as I haven't seen "Legend" yet though its on my watchlist. Just wanted to comment that "The Krays" with the Kemps was particularly outstanding for me, not so much for their performances, but for the "backstory" and supporting characters of their mum and aunt. They were no nonsense women, sure shading their baddies, but when "Rose" collared that doctor up near the beginning when he was going to forbid them taking one of the twins out of a hospital? So classic. Loved it.

The Kemps version was much better, Hardy is a great actor, this film lacked depth and plot. I was really looking forward to watching this film but sadly it was a let down, had it not had Hardy I wouldn't have watched all 6/10 -- Kemps version 7.5/10

reply

Agree with jrmcveigh 100%.
I think what let it down, was the assumption on the the part of the filmmaker that everyone automatically knows what monsters the Krays actually were.
In some ways, the acts of violence you see them commit within the film are almost justifiable - being set up in the pub and defending themselves 10-2, Ronnie shooting Cornell (defense being a paranoid schizophrenic), the murder of Jack The Hat after taunting an emotionally traumatized Reggie. What aren't represented, are all the brutal things they were ultimately responsible for, either by their own hands or as a result of orders given to others.
And for me, that's what makes the earlier film better - you're put under no illusion whatsoever that the Krays were utterly ruthless.
If they'd remade it, word for word and shot for shot, but with Hardy instead, well, that'd be a different matter altogether, because his performance is quite phenomenal.
All in all, 'Legend' was a missed opportunity, in my opinion.
Definitely agree with the ratings for each film, of the above poster.
