So it appeared as if Reggie raped Frances, wasn't too sure while watching the scene, but then looked up the synopsis and he did in fact rape her.

Now as *beep* up as that is... why exactly do they both act as if it never happened? She never told anyone (including the authorities) and when they are talking at her door, neither characters really acknowledge what happened. Maybe it didn't affect her the way it should have because she loved Reggie and they were married? Not quite sure...

Side note, Emily Browning looked amazing in this movie, she is one beautiful woman and she fits the 60's era movies perfectly.

They might not have talked about the fact that he raped her, but she ended up killing herself after the scene at the door so obviously it affected her.

At that time, what he did wasn't considered illegal. Even in the US, marital rape wasn't a "thing" until a few decades ago. The logic is that a wife's duty is to her husband and she has no reason to say no. So there was no crime for her to report, and I doubt the authorities would have taken her serious anyway.

Plus the last time she saw Reggie, she was probably high as a kite, so whatever she was feeling was muted. Then she killed herself, since I'm guessing getting raped was the final snap on her sanity.

Exactly, spousal rape was perfectly legal in those days. Of course beating up the wife wasn't, but Kray wasn't going to be prosecuted - he could bribe, intimidate, or kill witnesses, jurors, and judges, the authorities weren't going to bring him into court unless they were damn sure they could send him away for a long time.

And France's family couldn't help her either, nobody could or would help her. I'm not convinced her sanity "snapped", maybe she really had no other way out.

I don't buy that she had no other way out. She could have left him, she chose not to. She had her own attachment issues.

I don't think she actually want to try. Men like Reggie is so charismatic, she keeps unvoluntarily attracted to him.

I agree. She was addicted to him and chose not to leave. Chose not even to try to leave.

I wonder why they chucked that in the movie. I know that writers love the drama of rape, but in real life, the Krays were apparently very protective of women and didn’t even like them witnessing violence. Was there ever even a rumour that Francis was raped?

That could explain why the characters didn’t react to the rape. It was put it the film for no real reason.
