racial diversity

one of the things i love about the show. did anybody else notice that all the couple hugging jane for fertility are mixed?

reply

Also the show's main cast is a big plus for diversity. I've said this elsewhere, but I cannot say it enough - it's amazing to see 4(!) beautiful olive-skinned actors in lead roles (Gina, Jaime, Andrea and Justin) + at least 2 white Spanish-speaking Latinos (the grandmother and Rafael's sister).

reply

yes, i love all of that.

reply

Yes, force a political agenda that isn't at all realistic instead of bothering to tell a good narrative, brilliant idea!

reply

How is it unrealistic? Have you ever been to Miami?

What the hell is a Stiles?

reply

Apparently only straight white men have no 'agenda' in this world 

reply

Many white men do have agendas, but those agendas are disguised as jobs. The fact that they accepted those jobs is something
white men can feel ashamed of whenever seeing illegal
aliens lined up for tax-free day labourer income
or getting totally free emergency room care.

As a British viewer, I'm struck by how this community is generally under-represented in television. I'm glad that this show has been so successful.

I remember watching Dallas as a child. You'd think that Texas was a state with no minorities living in it. Other than the two servants, who had about six lines in total.

I'd never heard of Telenovela before. Im sorry to say that I won't be rushing out to watch one!

What's worse is that when this issue IS discussed, it's only framed as a problem of representation for people of colour or some silly PC demands for SJWs. It's assumed that mainstream white audiences are fine and dandy with this imbalance cause apparently they only want to see actors that look like them! It pisses me off no end as a white viewer (especially one that's been in love with Spanish and tan appearance since childhood)...Yeah, thanks, Smart Big Shot Producer for assuming I'm a narrow-minded bigot. I really needed that in my life 

Their real selling point is that it's such a feminine genre in a sea of masculine media being mainstream and they're a great tool for improving your Spanish. Telenovela creators actually get how female sexuality and visual response works (it seems that almost no one else on the film and TV-making planet does) It's kinda ironic that the culture that produces them is about 50 years behind on feminist matters, but in that regard it is a LOT less sexist than mainstream American media.
