Isn't Jane too extroverted for a writer?

High quality fiction writing is generally the arena of introverts. It would make more sense if she was into journalism or non-fiction as that potentially involves plenty of human contact.

I just can't imagine someone as bubbly as Jane being happy with spending most of her life inside her head or even being able to concentrate on such a solitary pursuit for long periods, which fiction writing involves.

I don't think there's any one type of writer. I think an author can be an extrovert. People like J.K. Rowling and Stephen King don't seem like introverts, at least they have big public lives.

reply

Rowling is one of the world's most famous introverts. It has nothing to do with having a big public life but where you get your energy from. It just seems like Jane wouldn't be able to sit still and concentrate for long periods if she plans on writing full-time.

reply

No.

Creativity stems from a wide variety of people.

reply

You have to consider the fact that she is writing romance novels. No offense to the genre, but there isn't exactly a lot of psychological depth that would be present in most other genres. Also, she has shown on multiple occasions an inability to focus and get inside her head to actually complete a great work.

reply

Oh, so the show does actually acknowledge her problems with the task. Cool.

The problem isn't just extroversion, but that she's so incredibly high energy. She's one of those people that can exhaust the average person in 5 mins by just being present.

reply

I think extroverts are typically more creative cause they are less inhibited.

What makes you think writers are usually introverted? I think there are writers from both sides but my guess is more extroverted than introverted writers.

You have got to be kidding me... Introverts have a rich internal world in which they're not in any way inhibited and which is fertile ground for creativity and independent thought. The vast majority of great writers, inventors, philosophers, classic composers and artists have been introverts, with many appearing to be on the autistic spectrum. Many, if not most great actors are introverted to some degree. I guarantee you that the technology you're using to access this page was developed by an introvert or built on the work of an introvert.

I wish most business leaders thought like you. Extroverts are the ones prized these days in most companies cause they are better at kissing *ss. Statistics show they make more money than most of us on average.

reply

She's not a very competent writer though.

How is Jane even an extrovert? Let's see:

- she has one (!) friend, Lena
- she prefers to hang out with her family rather than with strangers
- she spent a huge chunk of last season talking to herself
- she has trouble making friends and overshared to a creep because of her social awkwardness
- she had a lot of trouble getting along with her thesis advisors
- she has chosen a solitary occupation
- I could go on

Jane is absolutely not an extrovert. So she's bubbly, so what? Introverts can be bubbly and happy in familiar surroundings, you know! ;-)

reply

Yeah, you're right - she's not exactly a party animal. It's just that the actress pours enough energy into the role to power up a city, so the character comes off as incessantly bubbly and energetic.
