Really! He desperately wanted to die so he can (escape from this show ) atone for his crimes, and the twins needed someone to die just an hour or so later. So, they could have used Luke as the conduit. Also they mentioned in one episode that the second wave will be a lot worse than the first, and Malina did pretty good against the second one. So by all accounts she should have been more than capable of taking care of the first blast.
shareAgree especially since it looked like he died from a power overload from absorbing too much. If he had vented the power he was absorbing right back out away from the Earth he could probably could have lived.
sharewait, i thought Luke ended up being an essential part of saving the world? i admit i barely remember the whole gig/plan but what would have happened if Luke hadn't absorbed the first solar flare thing? wouldn't it have caused massive (not total) destruction? if so, then he could not have just hung around until Tommy arrived to be the conduit.

To me, it wasn't Malina who took care of the second wave. It was both Malina AND Tommy. Their holding hands created this new power, some sort of force field that came out of their hands. It went up into the sky and engulfed the earth, protecting it from the flare as it passed.

He couldn't have helped with the second one since ther wouldn't be anything left to save by then.
He took care of the first flare so that Melina and Nathan could take out the second. Had Luke not done anything they all would have died.
Allthough I nevere really worry on w´shows that have a freaking time traveler, you can literally just jump back an forth until you fix things.
