Question about Tommy's powers

How come Tommy didn't steal Malina's power when he touched her? the one episode where Tommy and Noah visit Angela, they wanted to keep Tommy away from Malina. I originally thought they said it was because of power stealing.

reply

Do you get burned everytime you touch a stove?
No?
Why not?

BECAUSE IT IS NOT ON.

He also touched: Caspar, Molly, e-Miko, and probably numerous other Evos in his life, but Hiro TRAINED HIM TO CONTROL HIS POWER AT A YOUNG AGE. like potty training.

WHY IS THIS SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND????

reply

Because the show never made it clear and instead handled it like it handles all rules: Happens when the plot demands it, does not happen, when it is easier to write without it happening.

reply

Hiro does not understand the absorption power. He trained Tommy to be Master of Time and Space, for example finding the smallest butterfly.

The finale flashback to 2006 suggests that Angela kept an eye on them and likely informed Hiro how to train her grt-grandson in the control of his prime ability, lest he lose that in place of making lemons taste like limes or some other stupid azz power.

again, it's a basic concept, like potty training.

Even more, how did he not absorb Phoebe's power given how long he was around her?

reply

His power requires touch. He's like Arthur and Peter's nerfed power. He has to make skin to skin contact with someone and activate his power stealing power. He never touched Phoebe to my recollection.

A better question is how did he share Malena's power and still retain his time traveling powers?

reply

Hiro never touched Tomathon's skin until AFTER his power had been taken. Before then it was through Hiro's clothes and Tomathon's blanket.

Everyone assumes that Nathan (aka Tommy) can only hold onto one ability at a time but that's never explicitly stated or even explored in the show. There is a precedence for having absorbed multiple powers and not being able to use them unless you're made aware or taught how (Peter).

It's entirely possible that Tommy literally got a mixture of Arthur and Peters powers. My theory is as follows:

1- Like Arthur Tommy steals powers, not mimics them like Peter.

2- Mosy likely this is done either by touch or said power being used in his vicinity. Which explains Claires death and Hiro not losing his power until he uses it.

3- His sister has to be near him. Which explains why he never accidentally took anyone else's power for 15years.

4- Because no one has the exact same power the exact same way I'm guessing that when Tommy does get a new power it shapes to him specifically. Hence why Hiro and Tommy's powers are different, and could explain why his power is so much stronger than Hiros in some cases.

5- Lastly I believe Tommy keeps all abilities he absorbs but can only access one at a time. Peter was able to use multiple abilities at the same time, Arthur could only use a single ability at a time (until he takes Peters power) so it makes sense to split the difference.

With it being necessary for Malina to be nearby when he absorbs a power it puts a nice leash on him, thus making him not nearly so OP. Meanwhile I believe Malin a got a combination of her relatives power (weather manipulation) but also her mothere but more powerful (she brings a field of butterflies back to life). Where Claires power was internal, Malinas is external.

But this is just my theory

Good theory for number 3, but destroyed by the writers in the ice cream shop scene where Caspar dies. Tomathon has no memory of that power at the time (therefore he can't consciously control it and would use it automatically), Malina is nearby and he touches Luke while Luke is using his power. The only way 3 could work would be: Malina must be nearby, The other person must be using their power, Tomathon must be touching the person AND Tomathon must NOT be using any other power. This theory, however, was killed at conception since Claire's power could not be turned off, yet Tomathon got Hiro's power. The writers put no rules in place for this power, just used it as the plot demanded and forgot it existed the rest of the time.
